Howtophoto.com - A photographer's review

Back to my blog after a while, but this time it is not a regular landscape photoshoot or a shot from down under that I chose to present. I recently had the privilege to Review one of the courses of howtophoto.com which is a Photography resource for amateur photographers or hobbyists, in my opinion.

The course I reviewed is "Basics of Digital Photography". It is well designed to cater to the needs of a digital photographer and makes a laudable attempt at four distinct topics to help amateurs, hobbyists or starters, irrespective of the gear.

The course starts with the camera setup to enlighten the different functions and concepts of a digital camera (irrespective of the make, point and shoot or reflex cameras or a smartphone camera). Once you know your gear and are raring to start shooting with your beloved camera, a lesson in composition techniques will lift you above the regular trigger happy crowd that you pass across daily. This is exactly what the course does and it delivers the message in an easy to digest fashion which I think will appeal to all. The next two lessons have been constructed around the topics of landscape and portrait photography which most of us are drawn to. Again the rules surrounding these areas, the concept and the tips are delivered in a fascinating way making use of some apt examples along the way.

Well as a matter of fact all of this looks good, but what is the difference between the courses offered by howtophoto.com and other websites (not to forget many of them are free too)?
Each course is categorised into educational content, examples using photographs and tasks for the students to work on. The tasks section is the differentiator where the students can upload their photos and also interact with professional tutors online, get some comments on how to improve their shots.

Cut to chase, such services always come at a cost and howtophoto.com is no different. Currently "Basics of Digital Photography" is offered at $79.95. That definitely is a lot of money personally speaking.

If you are like me and thinking whoa that's a lot then there are individual topics offered currently for $29.95. But and a big BUT - is this amount justified, you may ask.
Neutrally speaking here, the content offered is very good, filled with examples and made very easy to understand for anyone and to top it all you get to interact with a professional photographer on improving your skills - the combination is definitely good but the price tag may or may not be justified for many, so to each his/her own.

Just as I was writing this review, I stumbled upon the "camera setup" course which as of 11th Jan 2015 is offered a free course. The justification you were after may well be answered here if you want to try the free course.

If you like to checkout the courses, here are the referral links to the courses.
