I was driving along Larch Mountain Road outside of Corbett, Oregon. There are many clear cut areas along the road before you hit the protected forest. One in particular caught my eye, and I made a point to stop and investigate. Standing in the middle of this devastating mess of old stumps, logs and logging debris was the ruins of an old abandoned rock chimney. There was a dirt road extending out past a locked gate and we walked to road a ways until we got as close as we could, and then being careful not to trip over the branches and other rubble, made our way towards it. When we reached it we looked around for other signs of the old homestead, but there were none to be found. On the backside of the structure in the cement holding the rocks together was the hand-carved date "1920". I thought the ominous storm clouds that were quickly moving in over the scene added to the mystery of the fireplace. If walls, or in this case chimneys, could talk...
