All Geared Up For The Autumn Rut

Red Deer Stag – ISO 1000; 50-140mm + 1.4x TC; f/4; 1/280 sec (click image to view larger size)

It’s that time of year again when the male deer are looking magnificent ahead of the Autumn Rut (breeding season).

As usual, I’ve been out in Richmond Park a few times over the last couple of weeks, getting “in the zone” so to speak, with my photography. I always like to get in some practise before the main event, making sure my equipment is functioning and my technique is on the ball (steadiness, focusing, that sort of thing).

I’ve had a mixture of conditions – total mist, grey & overcast, damp & drizzly, full sun – meaning my images so far have been quite varied.

For the most part, the stags have been fairly quiet (heard the first bellow on the 16th) but I noticed an increase in action this morning, with the stag above bellowing and corraling his harem of about a dozen hinds and chasing off a couple of younger stags who were chancing their luck.

I’m hoping to get more good images as Autumn progresses but for now, here is a selection from my recent visits, including some “non-deer” shots to give you a flavour of the environment:

I’m hosting a sunrise wildlife photo walk in Richmond Park on Saturday 6th October. You can see more details by clicking here if it’s something that might interest you. Only one place left as I published this post.

Does anyone else have some recent deer images to share? Let me know in the comments, I’d love to take a look!

All images were made with the Fujifilm X-T1 and the excellent XF 50-140mm f/2.8 lens with a 1.4x teleconverter.

The latest incarnation of this camera has just been released (Sep 2018) – the Fujifilm X-T3 – and it’s gaining excellent reviews.
