How to Get More Social Shares on Your Blog posts

Reading Time: 3 minutes

In a report published by Buzzsumo, it was found that the average number of Social Shares on content has been reducing over time. Few reasons for this can be the flooding content on the Internet and the reducing reach of Facebook pages.

About 800 million posts are published every month on WordPress.com.

The new algorithm on Facebook gives more priority to the content posted by people as compared to pages, in order to display in the newsfeed. This reduces the number of total people being able to see your post.

As a result of all this, you need to strategize the articles in such a way that it gets maximum Social shares and social media engagement to get better traffic from these sources.

Follow these to get more social shares on your blog posts

Content is the King

With the overflowing information being shared on the Internet, your content should be in the best form possible.

Longer posts get more social shares according to an analysis done by Buzzsumo. I’ve seen this on my blog posts as well. The 12th edition of my blog series: Real People, Real Stories is one of my long posts and it has the most number of social shares- 63.

Real People, Real Stories (Part-12): The Couple Who Sold Everything They Had To Start An NGO in Uganda – 1783 words

Most bloggers write posts that are of the length of 500-1000 words. Therefore, you can make a difference and get more traffic & shares by exceeding that number.

Longer posts have one more advantage. They are ranked higher in search engines, as found by a study from Backlinko. To make your posts longer, research well before starting to draft the content and make sure to include all the related keywords.

Use more images

Include images in your posts to support what your content talks about. If you’re looking for places to get free stock images, this will help you: Get free stock images for your blog from these 5 sites

If you’re aiming to gain traffic from one specific social media platform then you need to optimize your images accordingly. To edit I use Canva and I would recommend you to give it a try as well.

On Canva, you can get access to many free templates which are designed optimized for different platforms. All the templates are highly customizable and you can even start from a blank page to make one of your own.

For example, check out this Snapseed tutorial I posted: How to make the background black and white in Snapseed. What makes this tutorial easy to understand is the screenshots of the editing process that I’ve added.

Visual information is easier to retain than just simple text.

Network with influencers in your niche

To get more social shares on your blog posts you need to contact the right influencers in your niche and convince them that your content is good enough to be shared.

When someone whose words are taken seriously shares your post, it adds a value to your name and content.

To find influencers who share content similar to yours you can use a tool like Epicbeat. Here you can search keywords and it will find popular content published on that topic.

For best results, first go for smaller influencers, as the bigger ones would be getting tonnes of requests every day and your message might get lost on its way.

Add social media sharing buttons

You have to make it easier for the reader to share your article. You can do this by adding Sharing Buttons in your content but make sure not to overwhelm them with options.

Add the sharing buttons of only the most widely used platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Google+ or choose those platforms that generate the most traffic for your site.

Share2
Tweet

This is an example of a sharing button in the middle of your post. I would recommend placing them in the beginning, once in the middle and at the end of your post for the best results.

I added this button using the Social Warfare plugin installed on my WordPress site. Social Warfare adds beautiful, lightning-fast social share buttons to your website or blog.

Setting up your social sharing buttons has never been easier with their simple, “works-out-of-the-box” setup.
