Skipton, West Yorkshire

About an hours drive from my house over the border between Lancashire and Yorkshire you arrive in the small market Town of Skipton.
Skipton became a prosperous market town, trading sheep and woollen goods and its name derives from the old English sceap (sheep) and tun (town or village) - and much of that heritage remains with a mix of more tourist attracting establishments.
My day started with a lucky parking bay, just outside the town centre which then allowed me a stroll down and over the canal to glimpse my first views of the Holy Trinity Church and castle beyond that:
The canal provides a nice little trip for the tourists and the boats were well used as I walked into the town:
The main road, High Street, is a busy little place - nice and wide with lots of parking on the cobbles in front of the shops - lots of nice flower beds and some great old buildings.
The Skipton Building Society was formed in the town and still stands proudly on the street with it's white rose flag of Yorkshire flying high in the sky
Another of the great (and very clean) old buildings was the public library with its statue proudly outside:
The library is part of a selection of really great architecture and is just down the street from the Holy Trinity Church with heads the road.
Right in front of the church at the top of High Street is the war memorial and this really does look impressive, a tall obelisk with an impressive statue sat on top:
Even more impressive is the statue at the foot of the tall column of stone, sat there will all the names of the fallen from the great wars, truly a fitting tribute to them:
Your eyes are then taken back across the street to the impressive architecture that is right in front of you:
If you get time to stroll through the church grounds you will reach the castle which is on the highest ground, but I didn't visit on this particular trip - maybe I will be back for another look around.
