If there’s one thing that dogs, and some cats, simply love it’s a tree! Pet Insurance Australia is encouraging all pet owners to join in the festivities this National Tree Day, 30th of July 2017.

“Trees are the most important aspect of a healthy environment,” Nadia Crighton from Pet Insurance Australia says. “Having a national day where we all come together to plant and pay homage to these giant leafy towers in our streets and parks is a great starting point to chat about the importance of taking care of our environment.”

For dogs, trees are a vital part of communication and urination! “Dog owners know that trees are the number one sniffing destination for dogs during walks,” Crighton smiles. “For a dog, trees are a vital point of communication, they read like a doggy newspaper and tell all the secret scents of the street.”

The truth is, for a dog, life would be pretty boring without all of those lovely trees. For the two-legged variety, the need for trees is growing in importance daily and the organisers of National Tree Day, Planet Ark, couldn’t agree more. “National Tree Day is all about connecting with nature, and our pets help us do that in many ways every day,” Carol Warwick from Plant Ark says. “We take our dogs for regular walks, we take our horses out for rides, and even our backyard chooks take us outside to collect their eggs!”

Planting a tree to signify this great day is a wonderful way families can take part in helping to appreciate nature. Plus; it’s encouraging all Australians to do their bit in helping protect the environment for future generations.

“It’s an ideal opportunity for families to come together and watch the beauty of nature,” Crighton says. “It’s a simple way to connect with your environment while watching something amazing grow.”

• Get arty and draw a tree


“If there isn’t a planting site in your local area or you can’t make it on the day, there are plenty of ways you can still celebrate National Tree Day!” Carol says. “Take a picnic to your local park, take an indoor activity like reading or drawing outside, volunteer with your local Landcare or Bushcare group (or start your own), or take your dog for a walk so s/he can salute a tree or two!”
