Can Rabbits Eat Feijoas?

Feijoas are a fruit that matures in autumn.

They are green in color and elipsoid in shape about the same size as a chicken egg.

Feijoas have a sweet and aromatic flavor. They taste quite like mint, apple and pineapple.

They have a juicy flesh which is divided into a clear, gelatinous seed pulp and a firmer, slightly granular, opaque flesh close to its skin.

When it is ripe, it falls to the ground from the tree where it grows to get it at its fullest flavor, but it may be picked from the tree before falling so as to prevent the fruit being bruised.

It looks quite like a guava and has a gritty texture. (source)

What does this mean?

As you can see, feijoas contain a hint of salt and fat, a little phosphorus, plus quite a lot of acidic content and sugar.

This means that they can eat a little of it, but not too much. Because of its sugar and acidic content, too much may make them sick.

One or two small pieces will suffice for them as a treat but no more than that is recommended.

Preparing feijoa for your rabbit

To prepare it for your rabbit, just strip away the skin of the feijoa as well as the seeds.

Then cut it into small pieces, reserving one or two for your rabbit.

How does it fit with the rest of their diet?

Fruit should really be a supplementary food for a rabbit’s diet, and shouldn’t be the main part of it.

Along with veggies, a little bit of fruit should back up the hay and rabbit pellets that you feed it for the main part of their diet.
