Reducing shedding in German Shepherd

K

Almost all dogs German Shepherds often lose their hair throughout the year .

However, the hair may become knotted and tangled. The weather and the seasons of the year undoubtedly play an important role, but the general health of the dog is one of the main factors that influence hair loss .

A dog that loses more hair than usual and normal for its breed can have undiagnosed health problems. Hair loss cannot be completely avoided, but keeping the dog healthy and well cared for can be reduced.

Methods to reduce hair loss in the German shepherd

Method 1 of 2: with Food

Feed your dog with high quality food . One of the best ways to reduce excessive hair loss is to start with a healthy diet. The food for dogs that are cheap in the market consists mainly of stuffing materials that dogs have trouble digesting, such as corn and grains. Choose foods that contain meat as the main ingredient.

The better quality products cost a bit more, but they are certainly more suitable for a number of reasons. The nutrients in meat-rich foods are digested and absorbed more easily, promote better overall health and help your puppy reduce hair loss and dry skin . Keep in mind that better nutrition can help reduce hair loss, but not completely eliminate the problem.

Dogs with allergies or sensitivity to food are especially prone to hair loss associated with diet. You may have to try different products before finding one that is suitable for the characteristics of your animal.

Do not add vitamin supplements to your dog’s diet without the advice of the veterinarian. The “hypervitaminosis” or poisoning with vitamins, caused by the excessive consumption of these, can cause serious health problems for your pet.

Add olive or flaxseed oil to your food . One teaspoon per 4.5 kg of body weight is a good starting point. These oils contain omega-3 fatty acids that help soothe inflamed skin, reduce dandruff and improve overall hair structure.

Many pet stores also sell dietary supplements of omega-3 capsules or powders. Check with your veterinarian which is the best option for your pet.

You can also supplement the intake of omega-3 fatty acids by giving salmon, tuna or other fish rich in Omega 3. The skin of the fish is excellent, but make sure you do not give the spines, as they can splinter in the throat and cause suffocation .

Apples cut in slices (without seeds, since they contain traces of cyanide that can accumulate in the body), bananas and cucumbers, as well as cooked lean meats (without bones), are foods with a lot of water that help the dog to stay hydrated. These foods also contain healthy nutrients that keep the hair soft and shiny. Remember that only 5-10% of your dog’s daily diet should be based on any type of candy and sweets. The rest has to be high quality food, specifically for dogs.

Many human foods are acceptable and even healthy for dogs. However, there are some that we can never give our pet, for example, avocado, chocolate, grapes, dairy products, onions and, although it may surprise, raw meat.

Make sure your pet always has access to clean, fresh water . Dehydration can dry out the skin and, as a result, cause excessive hair loss, as well as certain diseases.

Method 2 of 2: aestheticallyBrush the dog’s coat regularly . This will remove the hairs that have separated and help redistribute the sebum on the skin. Depending on the type of hair, you can use a brush with bristles or a comb with spikes.

The brushes with bristles are the best for breeds of short hair and straight hair, like many Terriers and greyhounds. These brushes are similar to those for human hair.

The combs with barbs are appropriate for many medium or curly hair breeds such as Retrievers, Cocker Spaniel and St. Bernard. These brushes have small, dense, short metal prongs.

The combs are best suited for breeds with long hair and coarse fleece, such as your German shepherd .When buying the comb, we have to be sure that the teeth are more or less dense depending on the hair coat of the dog , so make sure to properly remove the dead undercoat.

Bathe your dog regularly . Washing regularly encourages the loss of loose hair in the bathtub of water (or outside) and not on the furniture. However, if you brush too much, you can dehydrate the skin, stimulating more hair loss.

The dogs with flea problems are constantly scratching, causing increased hair loss. Keeping the dog free of fleas prevents the skin from irritating and forming too much dandruff.
