5 Steps to Teach a German Shepherd not to Jump on Guests

Most German Shepherds that are not well trained  jump on top of people to greet them or just crave attention .This behavior can be very annoying and can also be dangerous if you have an adult German Shepherd dog because it can throw people to the ground or harm them. In this article I will explain why your GSD does not behave properly with  the visitors and he gets excited. I will also detail a method with progressive stages to teach your dog not to jump on the guests you receive at home.

Common mistakes of owners when visitors come

Many Had Owners often make certain mistakes to prevent their dog from jumping on top of the guests. These errors, instead of fixing the problem, reinforce the behavior of your dog. Below I detail the most common mistakes.

Enduring the dog: Many owners put up with their Geraman Shepherds so they do not disturb their guests. However, acting in this way, the dog will have even more desire to go see people. To avoid encouraging their behavior it is better to let the dog go to see people naturally.

Caressing or letting the dog be stroked when excited : If you pet your dog (or if your visitors caress him) when he gets excited and jump up, he will be more and more excited when people come to visit you at home. By acting in this way, you are rewarding the excitement and / or the fact that your dog jumps over people.

Shout to your dog: If you scream at your dog, it will get even more happy and excited so instead of correcting their behavior, it will increase. It is important to always maintain a calm attitude with your dog.

Lock away  your GSD: If you lock your dog when visitors come, he can never learn how to behave when you receive people in your house.

Necessary material for your GSD training

  • A short leash
  • A small cord
  • Awards (sausage or treat he love)
  • A mattress (your dog’s bed)
