We have always used a standard leash with Ruby. She loves walks, but is sometimes hesitant and occasionally reactive. I continue to work on her confidence by encouraging her to branch out safely on her own. And by branch out, I mean walk in front of us rather than staying glued to our sides.

I am well aware of the safety issues of traditional retractable leashes. Created by ThunderShirt, Dial-A-Distance is the first retractable leash that lets you choose the maximum length depending on the safety of the environment. If you are walking in a crowded urban area with lots of activity, dogs, and people, you can set it for a few feet. Whereas if you are alone in an empty field or big open space, you might set it for 10 feet. 

Dial-A-Distance gives dogs the freedom to explore safely within any given situation. When your dog reaches the maximum length you have selected, Dial-A-Distance automatically breaks. Of course, dog owners still need to pay attention, monitor the situation, and adjust accordingly. Dial-A-Distance also has a manual break for sudden changes or unexpected encounters.

Ruby likes routine and definitely noticed the leash was new and different. She was nervous at first, but adjusted quickly. I found the dial, lock, and manual break easy to use and very secure. The leash itself is lightweight, but still strong and durable. Dial-A-Distance is still in the final testing phase and will be available for purchase in May. Stay tuned.
