Company History

Motorists Life Insurance Company is an A- (Excellent) rated insurance provider that was initially founded in 1928 as Motorists Mutual. The company’s founder, Carl Crispin, created the company in Columbus, Ohio when he saw the need for affordable automobile insurance with “prompt service and fair claims.”

In 1965, Motorists Mutual founded the Motorists Life Insurance Company, which is currently offered by more than 14,000 independent life insurance agents in 16 different states. Motorists Life has approximately 100,000 clients and 6 billion dollars of life insurance in force.

As of August 2018, the 16 states working with Motorists Life include: Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Insurance Products

New York Life Insurance offers quite a few different services and products, which include:

  • Term life insurance
  • Whole life insurance
  • Universal life insurance
  • Long-term care insurance
  • Annuities

The company’s most popular product is term life insurance, in which they offer a no-exam (called Real-Time Term) and exam option. The no-exam option is good for those folks who are not in very good health, have white coat syndrome, or simply don’t have time to complete a medical exam and are looking to get coverage fast. You can get up to $500,000 of coverage with a Real-Time Term policy.

For qualifying applicants, Motorists Life offers term coverage from ages 15-80. You can purchase a 30-year term up until age 48, a 20-year term up until age 65, and a 5 or 10-year term up until 70.

If you’re looking for permanent coverage, Motorists Life offers whole and universal life. Their universal life policy is available from those ages 0-80. Their whole life policies offer a little more variety – you can choose non-par, par, single premium, simplified issue, or graded benefit whole life.

In addition to your policy, life insurance companies offer products that can be added to them, called riders. Some riders require an additional cost, and must be added at the initial issue of the policy. Notable riders from Motorists Life Insurance include:

Accidental Death Benefit Rider: This rider provides additional coverage if you die from an accidental bodily injury or drowning. The minimum issue amount is $10,000 and the maximum amount is the face amount of your initial policy. It automatically terminates on your 65th birthday.

Children’s Rider Conversion: For an added fee, this rider provides coverage on the lives of all of your dependent natural, legally adopted, and step-children.

Chronic Illness Rider: If you become diagnosed as chronically ill, this rider gives you the option to receive an accelerated payment of the policy’s death benefit.

Note: This rider is only available on Non-Par Whole Life policies.

Disability Income Rider: If you were to become completely disabled during the span of your policy, this rider can help supplement your lost income. Benefits are available for 24 months or 60 months for any one period of total disability, with a minimum benefit of $250/month, and a maximum benefit of $2,500/month.

Note: This is not available in Florida or Minnesota, and the Waiver of Premium rider must be purchased along with this.

Underwriting Niches

Motorists Life Insurance provides applicants with some underwriting niches that may be much more affordable than their competitors’ rates. They have six basic underwriting classes: preferred best, preferred plus, preferred, preferred smoker, standard non-smoker, and standard smoker. Some of the niches that Motorists Life are more lenient of include:

Build

Motorists Life is relatively tolerant when it comes to their build charts. As an example, a 5’10 male who weighs 209 lbs can still qualify for their preferred plus category, and that translates to a BMI of 30.0 (which is deemed an overweight BMI). We have provided a small sample of Motorists Life’s build charts to demonstrate their leniency.

Blood Pressure

For “preferred best rates, applicants can have average (untreated) blood pressure levels of 135/80 or lower. To rank in the “preferred category,” applicants can have average levels up to 145/90 or lower (treated), and preferred applicants can have levels up to 150/95 (treated). Considering a healthy blood pressure reading is 120/80, Motorists Life is considerably more lenient than other companies.

Common Blood Pressure Medications Include:

  • Amlodipine
  • Atenolol
  • Avapro
  • Benicar
  • Bystolic
  • Carvedilol
  • Clonidine
  • Cozaar
  • Diovan

Unfortunately, aviators don’t typically qualify for very good life insurance rates, due to their high risk occupation. However, Motorists Life allows commercial pilots and crew members to qualify for any of their preferred and standard ratings without any added fees.
