The Home Appliances Quietly Increasing Your Energy Bills

Did you know that in total the UK wastes almost £1 billion of electricity a year on appliances left in standby mode?

We all know that switching off televisions and monitors help save electricity, but even in standby mode they still consume power and contribute more to your Energy bill than you realise.

The worst offenders

  • TV set-top box
  • Wireless router
  • Tumble dryer
  • Television
  • Desktop PC
  • Kettle
  • Electric heater

The breakdown

Here’s what the average UK household uses their energy on:

How much you could save

  • Washing clothes at 40 degrees C or less: 24 kWh/year (141 kettle boils)
  • Not overfilling the kettle: 39 kWh/year (229 kettle boils)
  • Turning off standby appliances: 64 kWh/year (376 kettle boils)
  • Not leaving PC’s on: 80 kWh/year (470 kettle boils)

Other useful energy saving tips

  • Take the time to understand exactly how your energy bill works. Take a look at your energy provider’s website for helpful guides on reading your bill.
  • Turn off your appliances at the wall (and not at the device) whenever possible.
  • Get a smart meter installed so that you can see exactly what your energy usage is.
  • When shopping for appliances, always take a look at the energy labels to see the energy rating (from A to G) and how much it would cost you to run.
  • Don’t use your tumble dryer during the summer – use an outdoor washing line or an inexpensive indoor washing rack.
  • Switch off your lights when you’re not using them.
  • Microwaves can be more energy efficient than an oven – ovens use more electricity / gas to heat the air inside the oven whereas microwaves direct their energy straight to the food.
  • Use the newer LED-based light bulbs which are much more energy efficient and environmentally friendly.
  • Always make sure you’re getting the best value for money from your energy suppliers – if not, switch!
