Google Pixel 2 & Google Pixel 2 XL Plus Best Review

The one big difference visible when comparing both the Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 2 XL is the display. The Pixel 2 XL display is a whole inch more, with a higher screen-to-body ratio of 76.4%, compared to the 67.9% of the Pixel 2. It also has a higher PPI of 538 to 534 of the Pixel 2.

The Google Pixel 2 XL box packing comes with a fast-charge compatible adapter, USB Type-C data cable, quick switch adapter, SIM eject tool, warranty leaflet and a quick start guide.

The display on the Pixel 2 XL is evenly compared to that of Galaxy S9 Plus (and this is not a mean feat). The display of the Pixel 2 is crisp, responsive and bright. The slim bezels on the Pixel 2 XL means that it can fit in an extra 20% larger display into its chassis, despite being only 8% taller than the Pixel 2.

The Pixel 2 XL puts its large bezels to great use. It has loud front speakers that are clear. They offer slightly more bass and are equipped with a dual stereo. Both phones sport rock solid magnesium mid-frames. They are water and dust resistant. They are both durable and practical smartphones.  There is no headphone jack on either of the two handsets.

Google has come up with an aluminum unibody chassis. The matte finish on the phone does not attract too many fingerprints. It also helps hide the antenna bands. The volume rocker is placed nicely towards the right side. The SIM tray is on the left and also accepts a single-Nano SIM. The USB Type-C port is placed at the bottom as a physical port.

The earpiece doubles up as a speaker. There is another speaker at the bottom of the screen. The upper right corner houses a notification LED. There is a Gorilla Glass 5 P-OLED screen used, with subtle curved edges on all sides. The 6-inch panel of the Pixel 2 XL comes with an 18:9 aspect ratio and a dense 1440×2880 pixel resolution.

The fingerprint sensor is smaller compared to the Google Pixel, but it is quite fast in authentication. The sensor can also be used to pull down the notification shade with a swipe down. The pressure sensors on its lower sides activate the Google Assistant when squeezed hard. As of now, the assistant only allows for silencing incoming calls.

Google has gone with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 as the processor. It is an Octa-core chip which is also seen on the Nokia 8, Sony Xperia XZ 1, Mi Mix 2, One Plus 5, etc. You also get a 4GB RAM over a 64GB and 128GB storage variants. Sensors included here are hall sensor, barometer, gyroscore, compass, accelerometer and ambient light sensor.

It runs on the Android 8.0. The Pixel 2 comes with a Now Playing feature, which recognizes a song playing in the background and shows you the artist and title at the bottom of the screen. There is no active internet connection needed for this, as the Pixel 2 contains a database of song footprints that is stored locally.

The new ‘At a Glance’ feature allows you to get a view of time, weather and upcoming events on the top of the home screen. The bundled apps include Google staples such as Allo and Duo. The interface is quick and slick. Living Universe is added, which is a live wallpaper widget. The performance is really fast. With close to zero lag while multitasking or running heavy apps, games run smoothly.

The call quality is good with the earpiece being loud enough even in noisy environments. The dialer app now has the Google Duo integration, with the video icon now visible next to the person’s name. The rear camera comes with a 12.2 megapixel sensor. The front camera houses an 8-megapixel sensor. The rear camera gets an upgraded f/1.8 aperture with optical stabilization. The rear camera also gets dual-pixel autofocus. The focusing is quick with almost no shutter lag. The photos save instantaneously even with HDR+ enabled.

The large battery size of 3520mAh lasts up to a full day over a single charge. The Pixel 2 XL works fine while fast charging.
