Birth Plan

Tags: birth labor

Let’s be honest, the idea of giving Birth, aside from being excited and a wonderful blessing, can be a bit scary!!  Especially if you are a first time mom. At least it was for me.  Having a birth plan is a great way to ensure your desires are met during labor. Whether you prefer natural, or medically assisted (epidural) delivery, my comprehensive birth plan will spell out all your wants, and preferences you wish to be met during labor.  As you are completing your birth plan, use this opportunity to really discuss what you and your partner desire.   My husband for example did not want to cut the cord, and I did not want any pacifiers or bottles given; as I was exclusively breastfeeding.  Having not only what I wanted on my birth plan, but also having what I did not want; made me feel more at ease and having some control in what was to happen in delivery.

I broke my birth plan up into several categories of during labor, mobility, pain relief, preferences on if labor slows, during pushing, baby care, my partner would like to help, if my baby is a boy, and if Caesarean is necessary.

Please make sure to have more than one copy of your birth plan to provide to your doctor, midwife, nurse, or any attending family or friends.   This also helps new members on your medical team (such as your labor and delivery nurse) know your wishes.  Are things getting to the wire? If your getting close to 35 weeks pregnant, check out my post on what to pack for your hospital bag!
