Dogs are cute. There’s no doubt about that. Those puppy Dog eyes always get the best of us. No human being, unless you’re heartless, is immune to that. But, aside from the puppy dog eyes these canines have mastered, you’d be surprised how expressive they can be.

Self-taught photographer, Elke Vogelsang has captured his dogs’ most interesting expressions. Going through his gallery made me feel like the dogs are communicating with me. Never have I thought Dog Portraits could be so interestingly captivating.

Anticipation

It doesn’t take much to get this expression from dogs. Just have a treat in hand and you’ll be able to see that much anticipation for such a simple thing. They look more excited over a treat than a kid on Christmas morning.

Who’s There

Did you think only cats are filled with curiosity? The moment the door opens, your dog is the first one to see who’s there which makes them excellent guard pets. Their instincts are prime and super helpful for humans of all kinds.

I love how Elke’s dog portraits show their playful and instinctive sides.

Solemn

I love how this Germany-based photographer captures his dog portraits at the perfect moment. Take this portrait for instance. It’s full of action yet embodies a feeling of peace. Solemn even.

The dog is perfectly happy and contented with his life that we won’t be bothered by small drops of annoying rain.

Flavor

If I didn’t know any better, this would look like a selfie by a teenage girl to me. He probably just had something really tasty and he can’t help but lick his face clean!

Sounds like my best friend! Hahaha!

Scream

Maybe an argument with his owner about increasing his food portions? Or maybe trying to get his attention to let him know it’s feeding time. Or maybe his owner was about to throw him a treat and he had his mouth wide open, ready to receive the tasty treat!

Bold

Doesn’t this look high fashion? If dogs had fashion magazines, this would be the perfect cover! I love how dog portraits like this have such bold statement. It may mean differently for each viewer but you can’t help but feel that this photo is saying something.

Sarcasm

“Huh?!” “What?!” Gasp! Those are the words that pop up right away when you see this picture. Then again, I get the feeling if this dog could talk, he would be dripping with sarcasm. I can imagine him rolling his eyes. That would be such a cool thing to see.

Tongue Out

They must have been given something delicious. The one on the left looks like he’s licking a glass wall that has something tasty smeared on it. I’m curious as to how long and how many shots does it take to get a candid photo like this!

Contemplate

Who knew dogs could smirk?! He looks like a beagle breed but I could be wrong. It seems like he was in deep thought, probably trying to figure a way out of a problem, then bam! Eureka moment makes him smirk!

Persuasion

“Am I cute?” It looks like that was he’s thinking. Yes, you are cute. Do that a bit more and I might just give into giving you what you want! Ugh! Why are dogs gifted with powers of persuasion? 8 out of 10 times my dog gives me droopy eyes, I give in!

Indecisiveness

That look he’s giving his human screams, “Have you decided yet, human?”. Sometimes I wish dogs could actually talk just so that I can hear what goes on in their smart little brains. They probably think humans are mentally unstable creatures.

Beggar

Dogs are professional beggars. They seriously know what to do to get what they want. By using their cuteness, they get away with things you normally won’t allow. See this photo for instance. That look in his eyes is so intense. It’s almost as if he can hypnotize you to give him your half of the steak.

Good & Evil

The look he gives you versus what actually goes on in his mind. From the outside, you see the pleading look and on the inside, he’s saying, “Oh, yes! You can’t resist me!”. This the cutest battle between good and evil.

Happiness

That is the look of happiness right there. There’s no other word to describe it except that. I bet this dog is treated well, has a loving family and is warm in a comfortable home. Even if he isn’t, I bet he thinks wherever his owner is is home.
