Icelandic Provisions Skyr

Skyr is a traditional Icelandic dairy product that’s like yogurt, but better. It’s definitely better for you, and you’ll probably prefer it if you like thick creamy textures. Just to be clear, though, Skyr is not yogurt. Icelandic Provisions is one of the main suppliers of skyr in the U.S., and they claim to be the only company that provides “authentic, traditional Icelandic skyr.” To learn more about skyr or Icelandic Provisions, check out their website. Their plain skyr has a rather mild taste, but they also offer several other flavors, some of which are classic, such as Vanilla and Raspberry, while some are inspired by Nordic fruit such as bilberries, cloudberriers, and lingonberries.

Bilberries are very similar to blueberries in both look and taste. These similarities are probably the reason Icelandic Provisions combined them to form the Blueberry with Bilberry combo flavor skyr. Blueberries and bilberries have more in common than just look and taste though. For one thing, they are used in similar ways, such as making pies and jams. Also like blueberries, bilberries are strong antioxidants. In fact, bilberries have been used as a natural medicine for centuries and have been found to improve vision.

Cloudberries are related to raspberries, but they are golden in color, difficult to cultivate, and only produce berries for a couple of weeks out of the year. They have a bit of a tangy flavor and are therefore usually combined with sweeter flavors to make deserts. Icelandic Provisions also chose a sweet pairing when they developed the Peach with Cloudberry flavor. As far as health benefits go, cloudberries are known to have a high content of omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants.

The Nordic fruit you may be most familiar with is lingonberries, which are like cranberries. These are coupled with strawberries to create a sweet, yet tart flavor skyr. Lingonberries are considered a superfruit with high concentrations of antioxidants and flavonoids.

Icelandic Provisions also has a Coconut flavored skyr, and will be releasing a Key Lime flavor in June 2017. Coconut is known for it’s almost endless health benefits, including the fact that it’s a natural antifungal. Limes are used to treat digestive problems, among other benefits. In reference to adding the Key Lime flavor, Steve Platt, CEO of Icelandic Provisions, commented that “as we’re seeing more and more Americans choosing Icelandic skyr over other yogurts, we want to give them a wider range of flavors to explore.” It’ll be interesting to see what other flavors they add in the future.

All in all, skyr is extremely good for you. By itself it is high in protein (14-17 grams per 5.3 ounce cup) and has about four times as much calcium as regular yogurt. Paired with the health advantages provided by berries, Icelandic Provisions skyr is a good addition to any healthy, low-fat, low-carb, gluten-free diet. If you like yogurt, you ought to try skyr.
