As a busy mum, it’s likely that you have a lot on your hands most of the time! Doing day-to-day jobs and taking care of your little one is important but so is taking time for yourself. Staying in shape is one thing that can keep you healthy and make you feel more confident in yourself.

Let’s take a look at some exercises you can do from the comfort of your own home. This will save you a costly gym membership and will also mean you can work-out when your kids are napping or playing.

Start Off Easy By Increasing Your Movement

If you currently have a very sedentary lifestyle or you have not exercised for a while, don’t push yourself too hard at first. Make simple changes to your life that don’t even really feel like exercise. This could be something as simple as walking more often, taking transport can be easy but walking is much more beneficial for you.

Another option is throwing on some of your favourite songs and doing a mixture of cleaning/dancing. This is fun, gets your house clean and burns calories – you really can’t go wrong and you can even get the kids involved.

After a week or so of increasing how much movement you get in your daily life, you are ready to move onto the next step…

Cardio Is Important

Cardiovascular is the best type of exercise that you can do to elevate your heart rate, burn more calories and maximize weight loss. Luckily, there are many types of cardio workouts and lots of options of what you can do at home.

Running On The Spot

Running burns lots of calories and can technically be done without even moving. Running on the spot is an option for you when exercising at home or even up and down the stairs!

Workout DVD’s

Do you have any workout DVD’s that you can use from home? If so that’s awesome because many of them require no equipment at all. If you don’t have any to hand, why not look on Youtube? They have many free but effective workouts that last 30 minutes or less.

HIIT Workouts

High-Intensity Interval Training (more commonly known as HIIT) is increasing in popularity because it really works. It involves exercising for 1 minute of low intensity, such as walking in place followed by 2 minutes of higher intensity, such as burpees.

This would continue for around 20 minutes or so until you are entirely breathless and sweaty but can be proud of the fact that you’ve done an amazing workout! You can make up your own HIT workouts or check video below.

Toning Exercises For Definition

After you have been burning calories regularly with cardiovascular exercise, it’s time to tone your body in the areas you need it most. The following are a couple of useful exercises for doing just that, they don’t require any equipment but holding a set of dumbbells in your hands can make them even more effective.

Crunch

This is great for slimming your waist and getting definition in the stomach area. Most people know how to do a basic crunch – nevertheless, you can find an explanation before.

– Lie on your back on the floor with your knees bent and feet flat in front of you.

– Place your hands loosely on the back of your head with your elbows pointed out to the side.

– Pull your abs inwards, curling up and forward bringing your head and shoulders off the floor

– Hold for a moment at the top before slowly returning to your starting position.

Squat

Squats are amazing for working your buttocks and legs, giving you shape and definition in this area. Squats are pretty easy to perform once you get the correct form and can have amazing benefits as long as you do them regularly.

– Stand up with your back straight, looking straight out in front of you

– Your feet should be shoulder width apart.

– Slowly put your arms out in front of you and as you do, sit back like you’re sitting on a chair that isn’t there.

– Lower your body until your thighs are parallel to the floor, pressing your weight into your heels.

– Hold before coming back to your starting position.

It can sometimes feel like you lose your identity when you have children so having a little something that’s sacred for yourself is important.
