Kids want to feel special like any one of us. #AtoZChallenge Post 26

“If humans did not have the desire to feel special, the flower bouquet, the deserts and the gift industry would have died by now.”

We all have this need to feel special! We all love it when someone makes us feel special.

In our children, this need is greater. They have a longing to be made to feel special by their parents. They crave for that attention from their parents. Why? They have no accomplishments to believe they are special. They have no assets that can make them feel special. They do not have tested relationships that can make them feel special. They cannot be of use to anyone else who will go out of their way to make them feel special. It is left to the immediate family to make them feel special. Big responsibility, uh?

How do we do this? That is an easy question. The best thing about making someone feel special is that you can be as creative as you want. Be completely creative!

Here are a few things that have worked with kids brilliantly –

  1. Sneak in some ‘love you’ notes and encouraging messages in their books and bags.
  2. Fill their tiffins with their favorite food once a while!
  3. Allow them to sleep in a little extra.
  4. Watch their favorite TV program with them.
  5. Indulge in some fun pillow fights with them!
  6. Share jokes, ask them to tell you some, laugh together.
  7. Keep a small piece of chocolate in the drawer they will open to get books.
  8. A ruffle on the head when the Kid is lying down.
  9. Appreciation in the presence of others.
  10. Hug them when you come from work the moment you see your child.

Such small acts would make our kids feel special and instill a sense of being loved. This feeling of being special is directly connected to their self-belief.

The beauty of the above pointers is that these do not take too much time to prepare nor do they take a lot of time to execute. It just needs a simple deep desire to make the kids feel special.

If you hug the kid when you return home and tell them, “Your hug makes me feel fresh, irrespective of how my day was so far”, your child feels super special with these encouraging words.

Small efforts from your side can make your child feel special and connected. When you make your child feel special they will open up to you about their life choices and decisions. You become more of a friend to your kid. You will see that your kid is sharing with you much more than they used to earlier.

Making your kids feel special in most cases will not even require effort. You do not have to go out of your way to make your kids feel special. Small gestures of love and kindness are all that it takes to connect with your child.

Thanks for reading. It makes me feel special. If you comment, it will make me feel doubly special. Have you heard that ‘practice makes a man perfect’? Are you good at taking hints?
