Momtessorian Makeovers

This is another one of my Momtessorian Makeovers. I started Momtessorian Makeovers shortly after I started the blog. I have always had an interest in making things over; whether it be by recycling, upcycling, or refurbishing. I quickly found that I LOVE doing “makeovers” on basically everything! My first couple of projects got great feedback when I shared them on Instagram, so I decided to add them to the blog as the “Momtessorian Makeovers”!  One of my first projects was How I transformed this dresser for under$60 in one weekend. Another one of my projects, How to transform a scrap piece of wood into a family namesake sign was on of my favorites! This is basically where the beginning stages of our family business, The Cedar Company Candles and Decor came about!

The Cedar Company Candles and Decor is our business that specializes in not only all natural, 100% soy wax candles, but a great variety of handmade & reclaimed wood decor items. We also have some glass decor items as well! A lot of what we offer through our business originated in my early makeover and recycled projects. We took some of the ideas from my projects, and used them as a stepping stone into the project pieces we make today. My love and passion for DIY projects transformed into a full blown business for our family!

Now that you have a little bit of backstory, let’s jump in to this fun photo holder project with one of my favorite items…mason jars!

Mason jars, we all love them…am I right?

Good ole’ mason jars, I’m going to say that it is safe to say that we all love them and their versatility for basically all types of things…right!? You can seriously use a mason jar for almost anything…storing food, a cup, decor items, pen holder, planter, organizer, kitchen utensil holder. The list can literally go on and on! If you’re anything like me, then you will find mason jars in almost EVERY room in my house. I pretty much use them in all the ways I listed above, and many more! The thing is, when you use the jar for things, you end up with the lids just hanging around, without a purpose or home. I have come up with a fun way to use the flat mason jar lid!

Wondering what part the “flat” mason jar lid is?

Mason jars have a two-part top. There is a lid with a rubber ring on the underside, which creates the vacuum seal. This is what is referred to as the flat lid is.The other part, which is the outer band with screw threads that are reusable.  There are MANY things that we can upcycle from the outer bands; I will be sure to share some of those ideas with you in a future post! For now, I will show you exactly what you can use the flat lid for.

You can use any brand mason jar for this project. I prefer Ball Mason Jars, and use them in all of my mason jar projects. They come in a ton of sizes, and are great for all types of things.

Materials needed

-A flat mason jar lid

-clothespins

-thick rope

You’ll also need:

–a hot glue gun

-a pair of scissors

-white chalk paint

–foam brushes

Below you will find the step by step instructions on creating your own DIY photo holder

1. Paint the clothespins

I used white chalk paint. I also decided to give my clothespins a whitewashed look. I painted on a layer of paint, then immediately wiped it off. I let the front dry completely, then repeated the same on the back of the clothespins.

2. Cut your rope the desired length

Determine how long you would like your piece of rope. Measure it out and then use the scissors to cut your rope. I cut a piece of rope that measured about 12 inches long. The length of your rope will depend on how low you want your photo to hang at the end of the clothespins once they are attached.

3. Glue your rope onto the back of the flat mason jar lid

Figure out where you want to glue your rope, and hot glue it to the back of the flat mason jar in your desired location. I decided that the best place to glue the rope was towards the lower portion of the flat lid. That way, the rope would hang at a good length from the flat lid.

4. Glue the clothespins to the rope

Put hot glue about halfway down the clothespin, and glue it to the rope. Repeat this step for both of the clothespins.

5. Your DIY Farmhouse photo holder is complete!

Let the glue dry a few minutes before using. Once the glue is dry, you can attach your favorite photo! Here is when you can decide to use the options of either a magnet or a command hook. You can easily add a dab of hot glue to the back of your flat lid, and add a small, round magnet to it.

In the end

This was so easy and simple to make! It only took a few items to complete and put together this photo holder.  I will soon be sharing what fun things you can make with the mason jar lid rings, so stay tuned for that! Have you made something fun with your unused flat mason jar lids? Please be sure to share it with me in the comments!
