Another Momtessorian Makeover coming your way!

I have a confession…I am addicted to DIY projects!!! You know, the first step is admitting you have a problem, and this is actually a good problem to have!! But seriously though, it has been some time since my last DIY project post, and I have been having withdrawls.  I look daily on different sites for my next project to makeover, and it has not been easy finding the best, cheap finds.

So, when I was looking for an easy, fun project for the kids to make for this past Mother’s Day, I decided that the children in my class would make mini terra cot pot windchimes. They came out so cute, that I decided to make a larger one for myself, but with a little farmhouse flair and design! It was seriously SO easy to make, and it was also fun as well. The good thing about DIY projects is that you’re at liberty to design the project with whatever fits your personal style and design. I documented step by step directions for completing this amazing project.

Terra Cotta Pot Windchime-step by step instructions

Supplies needed:

–Terra Cotta pot in your desired size (I used a 5in” pot)

–Rust-Oleum Chalked Chalk Paint in your desired color (I used Linen White Ultra Matte)

–Waverly Inspirations Wax

–Elastic cording

–Cosmos Wind chime pipes

–Foam sponge paint brush

–Figure 8 split key ring

-Hot glue gun (if needed) to secure the figure 8 key ring

Step 1:

Start out by choosing a chalk paint color. White is a signature color in farmhouse designs, so I decided to go with Linen White. Paint the outside of the pot. Try not to worry about covering the pot with a even coat of paint the first time around. You’ll have a chance to cover the pot thoroughly with the second or third coats. Once the outside of the pot is dry, paint the inside. Repeat this step as many times as you feel is sufficient for your pot.

Step 2:

Next, use the sanding block to sand the terra cotta pot to your desired look. It is your pot, so sand a little or sand a lot.  Make it to your desired look!

Step 3:

Once you have your terra cotta pot sanded to the way you would like it to look, now it is time to seal it with wax.  Waverly Inspirations wax is designed to work well with chalk paint.

One coat of wax should be sufficient.  Let the wax sit and dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Step 4:

Next, cut the desired length of stretchy cording to hang your wind chime.  Attach the figure 8 key ring to the loop end of the stretchy cord.

Step 5:

Time to put your wind chime together! First, weave your figure 8 key ring through the hole in your terra cotta pot.  If you have a larger hole in your pot like I do, you may need to add some hot glue to the hole to make sure the key ring stays put.

Tie the wind chime pipes on to the stretchy cord at various lengths along the cord.  I double tied the pipes to make sure they were secure.  Make sure that your figure 8 key ring is secure enough to hold the terra cotta pot up.  BE CAREFUL! I say this of course because mine figure 8 key ring wasn’t secure the first time I tried hanging it!  Luckily I caught it and it didn’t break.

Step 6:

Hang your wind chime and enjoy!

That’s it! It’s just that easy!  Very simple, farmhouse chic decor for your garden and even makes a great gift!  I would love it if you decide to make one, please send me pictures of your completed wind chime!  Let me know in the comments is you’re thinking about making one of these beauties!

Happy Makeovers!
