Geek of the Week: Emily from The 5 Parkers

The latest Geek of the Week is my friend Emily Parker- supermom to four, dog whisperer (she often watches our aussie Sierra), cosplayer and blogger at The5Parkers.com.
I’m Emily Parker. I work in the non-profit field and in my free time, I blog at The5Parkers.com
2) What do you geek out on?
I absolutely love Doctor Who and all things Batman. I love superheroes in general. Before I went back to work, it was rare to see me in anything besides a geeky shirt of some kind. I now cosplay as a normal person during the week but I’d always rather be talking about time travel or the struggles of being a rich orphan.
3) Marvel or DC? and Why?
I have a hard time deciding which team I’m on. I love Batman. But, as a whole, I like the heroes and villains of Marvel better. But, The Flash is pretty awesome, too.
4) Star Wars or Star Trek? and Why?
I love them both but Star Trek (The Next Generation) is what really started me on my geek path.
5) Were you a geeky kid or did you come into it later in life?
I started out very not geeky. I never really felt like I fit in but I always wanted to. I wanted to wear the popular clothes and all that. It was in college that I started to learn more about the “other side” and realize that I’d much rather not fit in with them. I had roommates who watched Star Trek every day and listened to obscure indie music like Matthew Sweet. Initially, I was just annoyed that we weren’t watching soap operas but I eventually got sucked into TNG.
Later, I got hooked on Buffy the Vampire Slayer which led me to going to Buffy cons and then the other cons. Then I was all in.
6) Are your kids into the geek stuff too?
They didn’t really have much of a choice! haha. We started taking them to cons right away. The boys are particularly into geek life. My daughter has rebelled against it a bit. But, now at 10, she has become a sudden Whovian so I’m looking forward to trying some Doctor Who family cosplays again.
7) Are you working on anything right now you’d like to share?
Lizzie (daughter) wants to be the 13th Doctor so I’m starting to work on that.

Big thank you to Emily for answering those seven tough, soul-searching questions
