Don’t wear jewellery to office unless you have read this!

In Office you want to project yourself as a smart professional who is always well put together. If your clothes echo this, your Jewellery should also reflect that. You don’t want to be known as the person who comes dressed like a Christmas tree to office. You don’t want colleagues to talk about your gold overload behind your back. So it is very important to stick to the basics.

1. Invest in a good watch

Most people will look at your hand, and apart from a good manicure, a good watch will go a long way to establish how classy you are. It does not have to be a very expensive watch, but it needs to be an elegant timepiece. You can choose leather or metal wrist bands, but stay away from rubber. Choose a subtle dial without any flashy pops of colour. The bezel may or may not be embellished, but if it is, make sure it is not over the top.

2. Wear statement pieces

It can be a chunky neck piece, a wrist cuff or even a finger ring, but a classy statement piece can really up your game. However, please remember that when you wear a statement piece, the other items need to be more mellow. For example, if you are wearing a chunky necklace, keep your Earrings and wristlets to a subtle, barely-there minimum. Your statement piece should be like art – it should have the focus without other items distracting from it.

3. Keep to a minimum when possible

The more elegant thing to do on a daily basis is to wear subtle jewellery. This includes a pair of stud earrings or earrings with a small drop, a thin chain (with a small pendant, if required), a good watch and at most one finger ring. Any more than this, and you are drawing attention to yourself. You can at most add a pair of thin bangles, one on each wrist, or even just one. As a married woman, if you choose to wear a mangalsutra or toe rings or even a bangle, you can go ahead, but don’t wear much else.

4. Pick one accessory

If you had to pick just one piece of jewellery for work, choose a pair of earrings. Oversized studs or statement earrings look very classy and can easily replace everything else. You can also wear a piece with a small drop but avoid big hoops or really dangly, long earrings. Remember, your office isn’t the place to show off your collection of junk or expensive jewellery. The idea is to look elegant, not like a bust in a jewellery store.

5. Understand the difference between workwear and partywear

A thin layered necklace might work, but a heavy kundan necklace will never work in office. A subtle ring with or without a stone is great, but avoid wearing stackable rings that span multiple fingers or go over the knuckles. An oversized stud looks classy but leave at home that long dangler with pompoms at the end.

6. When in doubt, wear pearls

Pearls are very elegant and there is a reason why even royalty prefer them. A string of pearls on your neck, pearl studs or drops on ears or even a pearl wristlet can add a lot of oomph to any outfit, whether it is a saree, a salwar suit, or even a pantsuit or formal skirt-top. Again, the magic is in keeping it subtle. A statement necklace with big pearls should never be teamed with a long earring.

7. Watch what you wear

While the office is not the place to show off your expensive jewellery, you shouldn’t also wear anything that is cheap or discoloured. You may own a lot of earrings that you bought for cheap on the streets but if they are chipped or discoloured due to exposure, throw them away. Believe us when we say this, people will notice if your earring has even one rhinestone missing. Don’t wear anything that makes you look careless or like a person who couldn’t afford a decent piece.

8. Don’t let your jewellery be heard!

Office jewellery should never be heard. You don’t want to be that person who furiously types away on a computer while everyone around you is getting irritated by the constant jingle of your bangles. We get that in India, once a woman is married, their in-laws expect them to wear multiple items of jewellery or even thick bangles. But have a chat with them, or remove the jewellery in your purse before you enter office and stick with one piece that will not distract or irritate your coworkers.
