Witch Burning Occurs in South Africa

By: Alex Kack

Two sisters were burned to death in the South African province of Eastern Cape.

The Women, aged 53 and 33 had been accused of practicing Witchcraft by locals, and were removed from their homes by their attackers. Shortly after the murder their homes were also burnt down.

Seven people have been arrested so far in conjunction with the attack, and Alfred Nzo District Municipality Mayor Sixolile Mehlomakhulu has condemned the attack in the strongest words possible.

This is not the first time women have been on the receiving end of violence due to allegations of witchcraft in Eastern Cape. In May of this year a video surfaced online showing two women, accused of witchcraft, who had been stripped naked and were being whipped.

Violence against those associated with witchcraft and other pagan religions has been common across the world, for centuries, however the kidnapping and burning of supposed witches, has not been common in most of the western world since the early 1700’s.

Currently today both Saudi Arabia and Cameroon have laws strictly prohibiting the practice of witchcraft.
