1 It takes better portraits
Like the iPhone 8 Plus, the iPhone X has Portrait Mode, which optimises the settings for taking striking portraits.
But it also has a feature called Portrait Lighting. This uses the depth-sensing optics and precise facial mapping to bring studio-quality lighting effects to your portraits.
As in Portrait Mode, the camera can blur out the background to make the shot’s subject the star of the show.
But it also uses artificial intelligence (AI) to read the precise contours of your face and light you in the most flattering way possible.
Examples include ‘natural light’, ‘contour light’ and ‘stage light’.They’re not filters either – this is a real-time analysis of what’s in front of the camera.
2 TrueDepth
The front-facing camera has got an upgrade too. It’s now a TrueDepth camera, which analyses more than 50 different facial muscle movements and mirrors your expressions using 12 Animoji (animated emoji).
So you can choose the panda, and your smile, grimace, frown or gurn will be mirrored on the animated face. Lots of fun.
3 Upgraded innards
But it’s the dual rear camera set-up that’s the real focus (no pun intended).
Both cameras feature larger and faster 12-megapixel sensors, new colour filters and deeper pixels.
There’s also a new telephoto camera with optical image stabilisation (OIS).
Both of the rear cameras feature OIS. This not only compensates for shaky hands, eliminating blur, it also makes for better low-light performance.
4 It reads the scene before you do
Time was you’d have to check out the scene in front of you and adjust all kinds of manual settings in order to get the best shot.
With the iPhone X, you just point and shoot.
That’s because the ISP (image signal processor) detects elements in the scene like people, motion and lighting conditions and adjusts the settings accordingly.
The result? It optimises your photos before you even take them, so you get the best shot every time.
5 It’s a video star
It records videos in 4K up to 60 frames per second.
Just like the iPhone 8 Plus, it also records slow motion video in 1080p resolution up to 240fps, which is twice what the iPhone 7S Plus is capable of.
Cue plenty of action movie-style “Nooooo!” videos.
