Easy guide to making payments using WhatsApp Pay

In recent times, Whatsapp has been carrying out a lot of activities on how to make payments on their platform. Facebook started testing a new feature that lets you send digital payments from persons to persons using Whatsapp. This has actually kicked off in India.

If tests go well WhatsApp could roll out the feature to users across the globe. The new feature works off a widely-used digital payments system developed by a UPI (consortium of Indian Banks).

This Whatsapp payments feature will allow people to send money to other WhatsApp users, but this exclusive right excludes merchant accounts.

Users can now link their bank account (as seen with Access bank whatsapp banking and the UBA whatsapp banking in use in Nigerian Banks) to their WhatsApp account via Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and begin making payments straight to another user’s bank account through a WhatsApp chat.

Whatsapp P2P was first launched in India as it is their largest market with over 200 million users active daily users.

How to add bank accounts for WhatsApp Payments

(Exclusive to India for now)
  • First go to Settings -> Payments inside WhatsApp.
  • In the Bank Accounts sub-head, select the Add New Account option.
  • Click Accept and Continue if you agree with the terms.
  • Click the Verify via SMS and follow the prompts to send an SMS to start the linking process.
  • On the next screen, select the bank whose account you want to add.
  • If you have an account (or multiple accounts) linked with the number that you just sent the SMS from, you will be presented with your account (or accounts) from that bank.
  • If everything goes smoothly, you will see the UPI Setup Complete screen.

These steps can be repeated if need be when you want to add multiple bank accounts to WhatsApp. If you have multiple accounts added, you can designate one of them as the primary account (if none is selected, by default the account you added first).
