Tips to Make The Structure of Your Website Perfect

It is not a rocket science to design and develop a website that scores high on the atheistic front without making any kind of sacrifice on the structural stability of the website.
Some web designers don’t think twice going to the extreme at the cost of breaking the navigation of the website on certain devices. For example, if most of your visitors are from Safari browser, you need to make sure that your website is getting loaded fast and accurately on those devices.
Contrary to what most people believe, designing a structurally sound website is easy; all you have to do is to follow these 7 tips .
if you can integrate these tips all in the design cohesively and seamlessly, you will be able to design and develop a stunning website.

1# Content / Typography

Typography is the most crucial part of web design. It can make or break the interface of a website. Therefore, you have to be very careful that the typography of the website is clean and clear. Here are some tips to get the typography of your website right :

  • Use standard size fonts whenever possible. Small fonts might look good in some occasions but people will have a hard time reading the content of your website on mobile devices. You can fix the problem easily by changing the font size based on the screen size and this can be done by using CSS Media Query Function.
  • Don’t even think of selecting the dreaded Justify alignment for the text as this can lead to a clumsy interface with random space and sometimes a botch interface. If justify alignment is used, the text may appear different to different users depending on the type of browsers they are using or the settings of the browsers.
  • There should be enough contrast between the texts and the background color. You need to make sure that the text color is soothing. Use of fluorescent color for the texts is a big no.
  • It will be great if you don’t use any effect against the text because that would make the texts look really awkward and out of the place.

2# Structure

You need to have a proper plan in advance before you start designing the website. There are several programs are available out there that can help you plan out the Structure of the website. OmniGraffle, Visio, Excel etc are some popular tools to sketch out a plan for your website. The plan should lay out a clear hierarchical structure of the website. It can contain issues like – structure of the URL, Navigation etc.

There are few things that you need to remain aware of when you are creating the structure of your website .
The structure of the website should follow the navigation of the website. Check out the below image for example :

The URL of the wordpress page should be this : http://www.example.com/services/wordpress.html Basically, the URL structure of the website should correspond with structure of the website as shown in the above URL.
You would better off you stick to simple HTML and CSS while coding the navigation section of the website because search engines are still not that good parsing Javascript.
While developing the plan for the website, you need to make sure that you are ignoring the importance of internal linking. Orphan pages or pages that don’t have any link back from the internal pages of the website can have negative impact on the visibility of the website.

3# Color Scheme

The Color scheme of the website is another crucial aspect that should not be ignored at any cost. If you have already designed the logo of your website, you need to make sure that the color scheme of your website complements the logo.
The rule of thumb is to use no more than 4 colors in a website. Use of too many colors will confuse the readers and you will be struggling to create a brand image of your website. Some brands even use only one single color and its different shades to jazz up the look and feel of the design.
Before you finalize the color scheme of your website, you need to have a clear idea of preference of your targeted audience. For example, if you are targeting young ladies, you should be using these colors – Purple, Pink and Green. However, if your targeted audience is young male, you should be using Black and Blue color to capture the attention of the targeted audience.

4# Multi Browsers Friendly

Since people are using different devices to browse the website, we need to make sure that we are designing a mobile friendly website. Some web designers advocate developing a separate website to target the mobile devices but there is no need to develop another website to target the mobile users as we can make the website mobile friendly by making it responsive.
Since search engines have incorporate mobile friendliness as a ranking signal, it has become mandatory for business owners to make their websites mobile friendly and which is why you will have to make sure that the structure of the website can be tweaked easily to give it a mobile friendly look and feel.

5# Functions

You need to make sure that all the functions of the website are working smoothly. If you don’t have enough time in hand to check the different functions of the website, you would have to hire a specialist for the same job. All the links of the website and all the functions like – Contact Form, Subscription Form, Search Function etc should be tested multiple times to ensure that they are working otherwise your visitors will start leaving your website feeling irritated.

6# Navigation

Navigation of the website has to be as simple and straightforward as possible. It would be great if you don’t try to experiment with the design and structure of the navigation of the website. Vertical Navigation may look cool but you should stick to standard horizontal navigation for your website as people are more comfortable with Top Horizontal Navigation.

7# Readability

Readability of the website should not be compromised at any cost. You need to make sure that you are not adding too many elements on the interface as this might have a negative impact on the readability of the website.
Use simple font and there should enough space between paragraphs and other design elements so that people can concentrate on different elements easily.
