People’s preference for apartments in Mumbai is seen to be dominating over other property-types. More so, even the swankiest of independent bungalows have been demolished to give way to high-rises that can be home to many more residents. But that is not to say that the city has lost all of its green spaces. There are still many addresses in and around the city where, other than the sea, people can still enjoy the serene and calm environment. These include some of the popular lakes herein.

Talking about the lakes of Mumbai, there are three major lakes that fall in the Mumbai city limits. These are Tulsi Lake, Vihar Lake and Powai Lake, also followed by smaller Bandra Lake.

While Powai Lake has been a good attraction in the city falling just adjacent to the IIT-Mumbai campus, the other two lakes (Vihar and Tulsi) fall inside the National Park restricting visits from normal commuters.

Vihar lake can be considered as the largest lake of the city which could be viewed from regions of Bhandup West and the IIT-Mumbai Campus. The lake is famous for inhabiting crocodiles and also has a ‘Crocodile Park’ which gives a sight of the otherwise difficult to spot crocodiles.

Powai lake is an artificial lake in Powai valley which was constructed as a source of potable water. Due to this, there have been multiple levels of degradation in water quality resulting in it being declared as unfit for drinking water. Now, it only remains as a tourist attraction driving sales of the housing complexes and plush hotels surrounding it.

More recreational activities are found in another 200 year old artificial lake Bandra lake (built by a rich Konkani Muslim of Naupada), which has been renamed as Swami Vivekananda Sarovar providing a serene lake view along with paddle boating facilities and pisciculture tasks. So, if you prefer to live in the vicinity of this lake you might want to check out multiple options for apartments for sale in Bandra area.

As far as drinking water facility is concerned, lately Mumbai has been experiencing acute shortage of potable drinking water which has resulted in the government taking up measures such as 20 per cent water cut for residential and 50 per cent water cut for commercial users last year.

However monsoon this year has proven to be more than bountiful for the Mumbaikars. There has already been about 81 per cent (about 11.89 lakh million litres) availability of the city’s annual consumption levels which resulted in revoking the water cuts in the city this year.

There have been seven major lakes supplying potable water to the Mumbai city which include Modak Sagar, Tansa, Tulsi, Vihar, Middle Vaitarna, Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa lakes majorly located to the North of Mumbai in Thane district.

Four out of the seven lakes (two inside the city limits – Vihar and Tulsi) have shown good sign of overflowing reserves of potable water this year – thanks to the rainfall.
