Disney CEO Planning to Slow Down Star Wars Films

It looks as though Disney CEO Bob Iger has figured out what we all knew: A Star Wars movie a year doesn’t work.

You have to say this for Iger, he owns the fact that he was responsible for the mess Star Wars has found itself in as of late. “I made the timing decision, and as I look back, I think the mistake that I made — I take the blame — was a little too much, too fast,” Iger told The Hollywood Reporter. “You can expect some slowdown, but that doesn’t mean we’re not going to make films. J.J. [Abrams] is busy making [Episode] IX. We have creative entities, including [Game of Thrones creators David] Benioff and [D.B.] Weiss, who are developing sagas of their own, which we haven’t been specific about. And we are just at the point where we’re going to start making decisions about what comes next after J.J.’s. But I think we’re going to be a little bit more careful about volume and timing. And the buck stops here on that.”

With comics, animated series, an upcoming live-action TV series, books, and more, die-hard Star Wars fans such as myself are even starting to feel some burnout. I think a movie every other year is absolutely fine. I could even go every 18 months. (say like Dec. 2019 – May 2021 – Dec. 2022) and so on. I think this would even allow them to run two trilogies at once because one could be the winter trilogy, and the other one the summer trilogy. This would put them at three years between entries just like the first two trilogies.

Call me, Bob. We’ll talk.

Kidding aside, however, I think the break is a good idea and one I fully support.
