After nearly a year of work, Joss Whedon has departed his duties on the DC Extended Universe film Batgirl.

Announced in March of last year, Joss Whedon was all set to write and direct a Batgirl solo film. Whedon has announced, however, that he has been unable to come up with a story for the film and is stepping aside.

Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story. I’m grateful to [DC president] Geoff [Johns] and [Warner Bros. Picture Group President] Toby [Emmerich] and everyone who was so welcoming when I arrived, and so understanding when I… uh, is there a sexier word for ‘failed’?

Sources speaking with The Hollywood Reporter say that it may have also been partially due to the environment in the wake of the success of Wonder Woman that would have frowned upon a male director tackling a female-focused genre film.

Batgirl is reportedly a high-priority project at Warner Brothers, so expect to hear announcement in the not too distant future as to who will be taking over the reigns of the project.
