My Franklin Covey Planner

Have I told you that I love my Franklin Covey Planner? Well, I do!

I don’t really discuss my professional life on this blog too much because I firmly believe in keeping my work life and personal life somewhat separate. It’s a necessity because I work from home. That means that it is easy for the boundaries to blur easily. I’d like to avoid that. In short, I am a Social Media Manager. Recently,  I accepted a position as a Director of Digital Branding. In doing so, I’ve recognized that I need a better planner system. Not that I am no longer using my Bullet Journal. However, I do need a system that is better controlled and organized.

Remembering my Franklin Covey Planner

I purchased my first Franklin Covey Planner on 2003 when I was working for a non-profit on Wall Street. I really put it to use when I became a New York Teaching Fellow. At twenty-seven, I was going to grad school and teaching in a NYC public high school. Life was crazy for me and this planner kept me sane. Without it I stayed abreast of what I needed to do and where I needed to be, but I would have failed out of grad school without my planner.

Eventually, I became a mother, and all hell broke loose. I tossed my planner to the side and I became a perpetual chicken with my head cut off. No, not true. First, I upgraded to a Palm Pilot, but I never really learned to appreciate it. Eventually, that was tossed aside too. So, yes, then I began the headless chicken dance.

Fast forward to earlier this year. I began keeping a Bullet Journal (you can read about my #buju love here). The bullet journal kept me focused, on task, and productive. I love lists! In fact, when I stopped using it consistently, my husband noticed that I seemed very confused and unfocused. So, when I accepted this new position, while continuing the current one, along with homeschooling and being a wife, and starting regular gym workouts, I realized that I would have to get better organized.

Organized vs. Productive

Productivity is my goal so when I say that I need to be better organized,  I don’t mean that I need to keep a better calendar. Instead,  I need to organize my day while using a system of prioritizing and follow through. I need to list all the things that I need done and then I need to figure out which of those items are priority.

I thought about my bullet journal and I accepted that while it is great for my every day, it is not great for project management or for prioritizing. It is good for brain dumps. Combining the bullet journal with the Franklin Covey Planner that I loved back in 2003-4 was a must. I still have my old red Franklin Covey classic and while the inserts were all out of date, I knew I could make this work.

Here’s a video of my first setup, but I will be making a new one as soon as my Birthdaversary gift comes.
