I forgot to mention that in December, 1942 the U.S. government changed the salute performed during the recitation of the pledge. Prior to this, rather than placing ones hand over ones heart, you thrust you arm out straight in the direction of the flag. See the photo to the left. I wonder why the government decided to change the salute that had been used since 1892 as war was raging against Nazi Germany...
