temptation

Opening day.  45 degrees, slight Southeast wind coming off the water.  Quincy in March is a beautiful place.  Being at the baseball field with a 6 year old really has it’s work cut out for it.  Opening Day for my husband’s team and it was cold.

Trying to casually persuade the kids into getting to the game was really the true battle.  “I’ll treat you to lunch.”  I began the endless temptations.  “We’ll go to Target after the game.”  I tried to hit on every known nerve that might get them to agree.  “I’ll buy a pizza on the way to the game and we’ll have a picnic.”  You can imagine the look the 14 year old sent my way.  “Ok, we’ll get hot chocolate for the game from Dunkin Donuts.”  That was more his style.

Each promise brought anticipation that they just might agree, but each time I was left with looks of “are you serious?”

Hoping to capture that one item which would bring us to consensus, I reached into my Mommy archives.

Cash, no, no cash.  Although I will save that one for another day.

Vacation?  Who am I kidding?  Then I’d have to go with them.

Come on, come on, what would be the one thing that would get them to the game?

“We’ll get to see Daddy.”  I said with enthusiasm.  They really haven’t seen him since before he left for Spring Break.  Again, the glares.

Ok, so food didn’t work, cash would, honestly, that didn’t really work within my budget.  Hot chocolate did come close, however, there was one Holy Grail left, it could cost me.

“I think we could drop by Game Stop on the way home from the ga….” they interrupted me with loving arms, and grabbed their coats.

“What are you waiting for?” they asked.  “The game starts at 1:00,”  they reminded me.

How silly they are to fall for that one.  I may have said we’ll stop by, I never said we’d buy anything.  My plan of temptation worked.  We were off to the game.
