Work-Life Balance?

Salt is a preservative. Our ancestors did not have to go out to kill everyday thanks to this property of Salt. They could kill cattle in hordes and store their meat in salt. Not to while away, but to create more work. For themselves and for others. They earned leisure too, which led to art, sport, et al.

But work / working is at the centre of who we are. What work it is has many premises to it - what genes you have been played and what circumstances you have been lucked into / out of.

Work is at the centre of Life. Not outside the purview of life.

That is why I get puzzled every time I hear "work-life" Balance. As if life was all those that we do outside work. If such were it, many lives suck as we spend most of our waking hours working.

Work many times gives us meaning to who we are - allows us to realise our inner potential. A woman who works at home all her life to take care of family realises her potential through her work - seeing her children grow and succeed, her husband go out to earn to contribute his share in making this possible.

Not saying that all work affords one to realise one's potential. As I said above genes and circumstances play their role.

Monday has a notorious reputation, but without Monday-Friday, Saturday and Sunday would not be enjoyable. If everyday was Saturday / Sunday, we would long for Monday-Friday.

Work makes world a better place. I can go on a perfect holiday because it is someone else's work. He/she brings management / planning / efficiency to it.

A fuck or a bitch is not inappropriate vocabulary. Phrases like "work-life balance" which lead people to cling on to wrong notions about life and create a sub-optimal worldview are foul language.

Work is as much life as other things I choose to do.
