Child Heaven - Adult Hell!

The Party
So obviously I survived. It wasn't that bad - it never is, is it? I didn't have to make an Excuse to leave early. I never actually arrived until the food had been eaten and the cake cut. And it wasn't my fault either, honest! Traffic was appalling, I think I drive about half a mile in half an hour. There was no chance of me being caught for speeding today. I actually felt quite embarassed at arriving so late, but it wasn't my fault at least. Ask and yee shall receive (an excuse that is). I must have been good in a former life!

Rant of the Day
Why is it that when you're a kid you think that grown ups have all the fun? After all, they are the ones who get to stay up late and do things that "you're just too young for" Yet little do they realise that they are the ones that have it good!

Ok, fair point, they can't go into a pub and down a few beers whenever life is getting a bit stressful (or even when it isn't) and they don't stay up all night watching horror films, but they do have an uncanny knack of being waited on hand and foot!

I cannot count the number of times today that I have witnessed under-the-thumb parents doing whatever their child has requested . . "get me another drink", "I want that one", "Whoops..." as the drink spills all over the floor and the Parent runs to the kitchen for a cloth.

Surely these parents cannot be quite so forgiving at home? I read an article the other day that kids these days don't know the meaning of the word "No". They are growing up in a society that is allowing them to believe that they can have what they want, when they want it - and this does not bode well for their futures. I completely agree. I get the impression that these children will grow up expecting everything for the expenditure of nothing - how on earth will they cope when it comes to securing (and keeping) a job. Will they expect to start at the top on a big fat salary? Something tells me that they will - and they wont want to put in the hard work either. As someones who's worked bloody hard to earn a good salary and secure a good job, I try to instill this fact into my son, showing him that he must work hard in order to get what he wants from life. I believe that it's working. It's all to easy to give in to kids for an easy life - I'll admit that I've done it, but you need to ensure that it's not constant. Kids are clever, they will take advantage if you give even an inch.
