Revolutionary wood tracking system

Yesterday afternoon when switching TV channels trying to relax after a long day at work I was intrigued by one TV documentary on one of the national television. What got my attention was a far from being sober guy who turned out to be a ranger explaining to a surprised journalist how impossible is to steal wood from his local Forest. So attention, the system is very easy and remarkably efficient. In order to check if a particular load of wood is legal and hasn't been just stolen from the forest the guy takes a sample log (we speak here about full-grown trees), brings its back to the forest and then tries to fit it back to remaining stubs....
the rest you can guess. If the log fits and the stub is in the forest which has been marked for cutting there is no problem. But if the log fits to a stub in a forest where the cutting is illegal.... Well, logically the whole load is illegal and should be expropriated... isn't it that simple?
