Detroit Realities #753

Hurray, we’re saved! Detroit’s debt rating has gone from 6 levels deep into Junk Bond credit status to only 3 levels into Junk Bond territory by credit rating agency, Moody’s (this means Detroit still cannot issue investment-grade bonds). Moody’s issued a report this week (corresponding with what I’ve been saying for 10 years), that Detroit must have tax revenue in more than a couple square miles of the 143 square miles of the city. Plus, the $617 million in state aid to the Detroit Public School System still isn’t enough to address its capital needs. (In June, the DPSS released a report that it would cost $500 million just for current repairs to its buildings).

Quiz of the Day

25-year-old Detroiter Antonio Hubbard was just charged on Friday with:

  1. First-degree Murder
  2. Felony Murder
  3. Three Counts of Assault with Intent to Murder
  4. Four Counts of Armed Robbery
  5. Four Counts of Torture
  6. Felony Firearm

The answer is all of the above. Hubbard did all of these at 4pm on Halloween.

Former Detroit Lions player Lem Barney and his wife have sued Happy’s Pizza for racial discrimination for being denied service. Barney says, “When we tried to order, I was told to go to their Southfield location.” What does Happy’s Pizza have to say about this outrage? “The store was closed. However, the doors were open because there were a lot of people going in and out as they prepared for a corporate catering event – the store wouldn’t even be open until the following week. We referred several customers who came in to our nearby locations.”

In other crime news, a US Postal Carrier in Ann Arbor, Javar Chavers, was arrested for being part of an illegal marijuana trafficking scheme. Large packages of marijuana from California would be addressed to fake addresses on Chavers’ route, he’d mark them as “Delivered,” and then hand them off to other conspirators.

And finally, in “It is a Darwin move to be anywhere near Detroit” news,

  • Detroit Police are searching for 3 men in a drive-by shooting at 8pm at 6 Mile Road and Gratiot. The victim was shot in his leg back and is listed in stable condition.
  • A man in his 20s stole a car in Dearborn and fled from a Detroit Police car (that wasn’t chasing him), and he hit a parked car, was ejected from the vehicle and died.
  • Detroit Police are investigating a double shooting by 8 Mile Road and Dequindre. At 3pm, a group of young men were hanging around, shots were heard: an 18-year-old was killed and another 18-year-old is listed in temporary serious condition.
  • Detroit Police were called when a body was found in a Jeep with a gunshot wound to the head, at Plymouth and Wyoming Ave.
  • Detroit Police are searching for 2 suspects (one male, one female) who tackled a woman on Huntington who was taking out her trash. By gunpoint, they ordered her back into the house, demanded cash, fondled another woman in the home, and then fled.
