Detroit Realities #714

Camaya Davis was less than 1-year-old when she passed away this week. She and her mother, Dasiah Jordan, live in a dilapidated home in tax foreclosure. Trash bags cover the missing windows and garbage is scattered on the driveway. Ms. Jordan went to the hairdresser, leaving Camaya with 2 adult friends as babysitters. However, they were not supervising Camaya using her new skill of walking when she had her hand on a wall. Next to one of the walls, is a hole in the floor where a vent should go, and Camaya fell through that to the basement. The basement was flooded with standing water, at least 6” high, and poor Camaya drowned.

This unbelievable and horrifically-tragic story has “classic Detroit” written all over it:

  • A tax-foreclosed home (some allege that she is squatting).
  • No money for home up keep, let alone child-proofing the home.
  • The mother knew about the hole in the floor, but didn’t fix it.
  • Two adults were incapable of keeping an eye on a toddler in dangerous conditions.
  • The flooded basement is a lethal pool to anyone that cannot swim, wasn’t fixed.
  • There are sisters, age 7 and 10, who also live in the filthy home, no father anywhere in sight.
  • The mother said she could have moved to her father or aunt’s home, but wanted to live on her own.

Speaking of water, a month doesn’t go by without someone getting an outrageous utility bill in Detroit. One Detroit family normally uses 6,000 gallons a month. Their bill for May spiked up to 29,000 and June was 90,000 gallons (physically impossible). The water dept. says they’ll investigate. The last time there were giant water bills, it was a programming error – but the dept. battled with homeowners for months before admitting it.

And finally, in “It is a Darwin move to be anywhere near Detroit” news,

  • Just on Sunday alone, 6 people were shot at 5 different crime scenes: home invasions, carjackings, to random stray bullets.
  • A Detroit couple in their 40s have been charged with first-degree murder. After getting into an argument with a man, Kosti Fields returned home to get his gun (as a convicted felon, it was illegal for him to even possess one), where Marcia Rogers drove him back to put several bullets into the other man’s chest before they fled.
  • An ex-employee and a couple confederates robbed a Detroit Coney Island at gunpoint. Although they were wearing hoodies, they were recognized.
  • Two men had an argument outside a Detroit Liquor Store on Gratiot when one of them pulled a gun and started shooting. One of the bullets hit the store so the clerk came out with his gun and was shot while the clerk shot the shooter. Both were arrested, along with the 3rd man, and are being treated at the hospital.
