Detroit Realities #706

The State of Michigan found evidence of possible bid rigging and collusion within the Detroit Land Bank. So did Detroit’s Mayor Duggan fire them? Nope, just re-assigned them, like Marti Delgado and David Manardo. It takes the feds eons to indict, so we’ll have to see if they ever get the act together.

The broke Highland Park School District board approved a $120,000 consulting contract and can’t explain exactly what he’s going to do. Kevin Smith won’t be in charge of any schools because the only one is a charter school – so it’s kind of fuzzy what he’ll do.

Ford purchase the old Detroit train depot. Now contractors are saying, where are you going to get anyone to renovate it? Already, many Detroit construction projects are 6-months to over a year behind schedule because of a lack of workers. Detroit doesn’t have that many skilled workers and those outside the city are loath to risk their lives for a project. Since Detroit construction comes with huge tax breaks, the suburbs are crying foul that their workers are being poached with taxpayer dollars.

Federal authorities took 29-year-old Yousef Ramadan off of a Metro Detroit flight to Israel. In his checked luggage they found: black masks, tactical vests, tasers, rifle scopes, pepper spray, 2-way radios, tactical knives, body armor, and photos of a homemade pipe bomb. Ramadan is from Palestine, lives in Ypsilanti, and a supporter of ISIS. Ramadan also has a U.S. Customs uniform with official patches and a stolen identity badge for the San Diego Airport security. Sure, just like every law-abiding citizen…

And finally, in “It is a Darwin move to be anywhere near Detroit” news,

  • A 20-year-old man was charging his phone in a Detroit gas station when two men entered and started shooting him. He died at the scene.
  • A 27-year-old Detroiter was killed after a 5am assault. Police have a 33-year-old suspect but he is not cooperating with police.
  • A 26-year-old Detroiter, Mario Tipton, was denied bond for killing a woman with a 2-by-4 board in an argument. Tipton was only given probation by a lenient Detroit judge in March for assaulting a police officer – or the woman would still be alive.
  • Axletold Gordon is a 46-year-old Detroiter now sentenced to 30 years in prison. He has a long history of convictions, the latest being selling heroin leading to an overdose.
  • A shootout outside a Detroit party store resulted in 2 injured and 3 arrested.
  • A 31-year old Detroiter was hitchhiking on John R when the guy that picked him up stabbed him in the upper back and forced him out of the car – likely a failed carjacking!
