Detroit Realities #694

A whole lot of desurgence to catch up on for the last few days…

Guess who was just disqualified to run in the Nov. 6th election for John Conyer’s Jr congressional seat? His hand-picked successor, and son, John Conyers III. Once the election committee removed the invalid signatures from his petition, he was well under the 1,000 minimum. He turned in too many duplicate signatures and signatures from people from outside of his district. This is the exact same problem his father had in 2014 and he had to go to court to bribe his way onto the ballot.

53-year-old Detroiters, Masharn Franklin, just plead guilty to embezzlement. She worked in Detroit’s Payroll Dept. where she faked garnishments in her relatives’ names. The checks then went into her checking account. The scam took in $265,000 – which she has been ordered to pay back.

Just west of Detroit, a homeowner’s front yard in Romulus is full of car debris, tail lights, airbags, bumpers, side-mirrors, etc. Her home is next to a T-intersection and is poorly marked causing endless accidents. Wayne County won’t do anything about the signage or lighting.

Detroit and Wayne County Law Enforcement have failed to collect DNA samples from convicted felons. It is a state requirement and has lead to arrests of killers and rapists that would have gotten away with their crimes. The Detroit and Wayne County have missed dozens of felons – every single month – since 2015. It was a loophole created when the state expanded who can collect DNA. So different law enforcement groups thought the other was doing the DNA collection, and they weren’t.

Quiz time: How many citations have been issued to the Detroit Land Bank’s demolition contractors over the last 6 months alone?

  1.    0
  2.     1
  3.  36

If you chose the last one, you’re correct! Yes, three dozen tickets for Duggan’s federal-taxpayer funded demolitions. In just the last 6 months. Reasons include: failing to put up fencing, failing to use water to minimize toxic dust, using unauthorized backfill materials, safety violations, failing to get permits, failing to do the work, invoice errors, etc.

Remember the shocking 5-year-old with cocaine in his system, leading to his mother’s arrest for 36 hours? It turns out the incompetent Detroit Medical Center made an error – there was no cocaine. Add this to the chronically filthy surgical instruments – in case you need one more reason not to get medical treatment anywhere near Detroit.

And finally, in “It is a Darwin move to be anywhere near Detroit” news,

  • Two women from Troy, age 21 and 22, went to Detroit to “score some drugs.” A young man pointed them to a home on Mitchel. Instead of getting drugs, they were raped and forced to smoke crack. One of the women escaped, wearing only a blanket, and called 911. Police arrived and 6 people were arrested at the home.
  • Curtis Johnson was walking to work on 7 Mile Rd. and Gratiot when he was struck in a Hit & Run. He survived 2 months before passing away. Crime Stoppers is offering a $2,500 reward.
  • AVOID homes in these Detroit zip codes: 48204, 48202, 48214 – 20% of the children have elevated levels of lead in their blood from old paint that hasn’t been removed. Only 5 of Detroit’s two dozen zip codes have children testing with low levels of lead in blood.
  • A young man was shot in the arm while standing on a Detroit sidewalk on Gladstone. A car pulled up and someone inside fired many shots at him. Police have no leads.
  • A man tried to abduct a 13-year-old in Detroit. Fortunately, she carries a pocket knife and during the struggle, she was able to get it and stab him in his side, enabling her to escape. She and her mother filed a police report. Outside of Detroit, what kids needs self-defense weapons to keep from being kidnapped, assaulted, and raped??
  • Speaking of kidnapping, 2 Detroiters are accused to kidnapping a woman in a botched deal to get their $600 back from buying two cellphones from her. Doesn’t everyone turn to kidnapping when you’re trying to make a phone purchase and get impatient?
  • Detroit Police arrested a gang member at Chalmers and Outer Drive, police found $27,000 worth of narcotics and a few machine guns.
  • A few Detroiters playing a game of dice in the evening ended when a man began firing shots, hitting one of the players in the buttocks.
  • 47-year-old Jamil Martin, a Detroit Police officer, was sentenced to 20 months in prison for extortion and bribery in connection with a stolen-vehicle crime ring. Martin was one of 4 officers who plead guilty.
