Take the Training Wheels Off!

It’s funny how in life, without realising, we can end up pretty much coasting along.

Working in an ‘okay’ job you are not passionate about, but stay on in because you are comfortable with the routine and pay.

In a dead relationship because we don’t want the insecurity of a new start.

Not really striving for anything but accepting anything.

*non exhaustive scenarios but only the few that come to mind at the time of the post.

It’s a very mediocre way to live don’t you think?

What are your training wheels?

I used to find it very easy to excuse doing things I really wanted because of the fear of the unknown. My “training wheels” were making those changes alone.

I remember the first time I travelled by myself! it wasn’t intentional. I had never been the kind to want to travel alone (I really don’t know why that was). Friends and I had planned a trip to an European country and booked flights and hotels. I was really excited as the weeks and days leading up to the trip approached. A week prior to departure, complications cropped up and the friends cancelled. Everything within me was crushed by this development because I wanted to go, and the bookings made were all non refundable, but I really didn’t want to go alone. So, what to do?

I discussed with friends and got encouraged to take the leap and still go. You better believe I tried finding other friends to talk into the trip last minute but alas! It was still just me on the eve of the trip.

After much internal back and forth, I got on that flight by myself and when I landed, took charge of the trip! I wasn’t going to sit in my hotel room by myself the whole trip counting down the days.

The kind of fear I felt, is something i’ve felt with embarking on new things on my own! whether it’s a business idea or course or activity and the older i’ve gotten the more i’ve come to realise that I should really have dealt with this ages ago.

So, here I am hoping that whatever stage in life you are at, that you are not letting your “training wheels” prevent you from living an extraordinary life.

I’m sure it was fun to cycle with training wheels on when you were younger and not have to worry about falling off or losing balance, but think of how you felt the first time they took off the training wheels and you cycled without falling? you realised that your initial apprehension were misplaced.

It’s the same in life, just because the way you’re doing things is comfortable doesn’t mean that’s how it ought to be and you really would never know what you are missing till you dare to take the training wheels off.

Remember, the training wheels were always designed to eventually come off, and after time building trust in your balance and courage, they came off.

So, start small with whatever you consider to be your “Training wheels”, build your courage and take the leap.

Be Inspired

xoxo
