Steubenville Rape: Activists Harassed After Bringing International Attention to Case

Over 2,000 people attended this Steubenville rally in support of Jane Doe
Why did the Steubenville rape case need national exposure? Without it, I don’t think there would have been a snowball in Hell’s chance that all those who assaulted Jane Doe, photographed her, and stood by doing nothing to help her, would have ever been held accountable for their actions, and inaction as it were, in a court of law without the eyes of the world focused upon them and our Nation breathing down their neck.

The persistent, unrelenting online harassment of Jane Doe by the bourgeois trash within what is left of Steubenville would have gone unnoticed and the bullying would have likely continued, which could very well have destroyed her and no one would have been the wiser. The girls who threatened her online after the trial verdict certainly would never have been brought to the attention of Jefferson County Sheriff Abdalla. The probability of a Grand Jury being convened in her case by Mike DeWine, the Ohio Attorney General, is nil. Life would more likely than not go on as it always had in Steubenville. Meanwhile, across the dirty river, Jane Doe’s life and that of her family would never be the same.

My name is Michelle McKee and I am the woman who took the story of the Steubenville Rape to Anonymous, which subsequently became an International media shit storm, and I've been having my ass handed to me for it ever since. Because of my part in the Steubenville story I’ve been libeled, harassed, defamed, threatened, you name it, it’s probably happened. I’m not the only one who has suffered ramifications of doing what literally 1000’s believed was the right thing to do though. Many people who were front and center in the movement to support Jane Doe were targeted.

Personal information was posted online, threats were made against them and their families, threats were made against others by individuals using the name of the target being harassed as a means and method to defame that target. There are Anons who were unmasked and had their identities released for no reason other than they were reTweeting about the cause or standing out in the freezing weather supporting a 16-year old girl who was being treated like complete, unparalleled trash by some of the most pathetic bunch of inbred hillbillies the likes of which Steubenville, Ohio has probably been seeing for decades. People of Steubenville, the town where she was raped, were blaming her, the victim, Jane Doe, for her own humiliation and sexual assault. It was her fault she was raped. She was asking for it and we all should have just kept our nose out of it and our mouths shut.

The crime committed, by all of us, every single person who supported this young woman and was disgusted and disturbed by the lack of compassion and complete loss of basic human dignity; those who dared to speak out against what we all read, saw and heard, and do it loudly, drew attention to the criminal and heartless acts committed against her; we were all guilty of High Treason against Steubenville and it's beloved Big Red football; we openly gave a shit about the degradation, humiliation and criminal assault perpetrated against a 16-year old girl and then we did something about it when the people of the town appeared to be too busy calling her a slut and telling others to mind their own business to be able to comprehend that she was the victim.

Anons and non-Anons alike from around the world came together and united under the same idea: "rape culture" could no longer be ignored and there were valid questions as to whether Steubenville's Jane Doe would be able to see justice done when certain high ranking powers within Steubenville's criminal justice community appeared to be hell-bent on stifling information and absolutely any discussion whatsoever about the case.

The curtain on Steubenville and the obvious, rampant moral dysfunction and failure in parental priorities there was pulled back and certain individuals have been having a tantrum ever since. In fact, when the Grand Jury returns on Monday, August 12, 2013 it will have been exactly one-year that the finest voices supporting Steubenville High School and Big Red’s honor will have been throwing e-fits that are sure to go down in history as the most embarrassing cultural stain upon the dignity of an entire town.

The decision to take steps to push this case into the national spotlight wasn't reached overnight, but it did come down to making a choice between knowingly letting a rape victim be tormented in silence thinking she was alone, or bringing a worldwide community to her that would let her know she wasn’t.

I received a note from Jane Doe's uncle not too long ago. It was very brief but it let me know, without a doubt, that we did the right thing. We helped her, we did not harm her. Do not believe anything you read or hear otherwise because it's a lie. The heart of #OpRollRedRoll was built by the love of hundred's of thousands of people from every corner of the world and Jane and her family have always understood what the message was that we brought.
