Here is a poem that I wrote a few years ago when the creative energy began flowing into my life, in abundance. Many nights I would wake up at silly-o-clock with words tumbling through my mind looking for an outlet. So, I kept a notebook and pen beside my bed – the only way I could get any Sleep was to set the words free onto paper! Many a poem was written at 3 or 4 AM!
This poem is about Winter and the strong urge that many of us feel to rest or hibernate as soon as the nights draw in.
Winter Sleep
As nights draw in and cold returns
Fallen logs are stored to burn
Creatures gather food to keep
As they prepare for winter sleep
Children curl up in a chair
Holding onto teddy bears
Parents cuddle on the sofa
Wanting winter to be over
Others rush, their lives are frantic
Wishing for a book and blanket
Some prefer to hibernate
To rest or sleep, or just to wait
As the leaves turn brown and fall
The winter sleep comes to us all
The inclination is to rest
And build a warm and cosy nest
So, don’t give in to strife and stress
Heed your soul for it knows best.
We may fight the urge to rest, and instead favour time spent Christmas shopping and partying, but life is all about finding balance. The long, dark nights of Winter give us a gift: space to think and time to rest. I for one, love to draw the curtains and close myself off from the busy world, snuggle up in a blanket and watch a heart warming movie.
I hope you all enjoy this magical time of year, whatever your beliefs, and remember to set aside time for YOU.
