It’s Raining outside. It’s my favorite sound. Whenever I can hear the Rain at night, I think of when we asked Cate if she could hear the rain, and she said “yeah, it sounds tewwible.” She was about three when this happened and she was just cranky about something. I don’t know what, but now I love the sound of rain at night even more because it reminds me of that story (I wrote about that story in December last year too).
I once read that the fact that we can tell the difference between the sound of hot and cold water pouring into a cup is evidence that our ears are remarkably sensitive instruments. It’s true, I guess. I always took that fact for granted, but it was cool to think of it that way. We can detect really subtle things with our ears.
I thought I Heard something a little off from our chickens when I went to close up their coop earlier tonight. I heard what may have been an anxious coo from inside, but I decided to just lock it up and get back in – it was raining. Then, as I walked back to the house, I heard another coo from the ferns by the gate between our backyard and the side of our house. It was Henny! She must have gotten out. I had to chase her around the yard in the rain. She stayed under the trampoline a lot, but I grabbed her after I trapped her in our plastic play structure. She let me “football hold” her in one arm while I unlatched the coop and dropped her in. There was something funny about the whole thing. I may have retroactively determined that the coo I first heard was anxious. It’s hard to say.
