1706.20 TEN YEARS LATER

Ten years ago today was the Longest day of my life. It was a day of waiting... and waiting. A day of fear and did I mention waiting?

It was on this very that Morticia was in Hospital and had open heart surgery to correct a defect. Of course if you're a regular reader (or perhaps you know me in real life) you know that she is fine. But on that day I didn't know if she would live or die. I have never been so scared in all my life.

Of course being the seasoned blogger I am I wrote a post about it, let's revisit that day in 2007...

My day started at 5:40 when I awoke after about 2 hours sleep. I needed to be at the hospital by 7:00 so I had arranged to drop off the girls at a friend's (no school for them today). I made it, just in time. Mortica had just received her 'pre-med' and was a little drowsy. They allowed me to wait with her and even walk up as far as the theatre doors with her. She was in at exactly 8:00. The next few hours were the longest of my life. 5 minutes seemed like an hour, it was pure hell. Minutes past, then hours, it seemed like an eternity.
Finally at around 14:30 a nurse came to get me and took me to see her. She looks so poorly but I was informed that she was doing well. I felt so guilty, she never wanted this operation (although she knew she had to have it) and I pushed and pushed her into it (not strictly true but it's how I felt). I got to speak to her which was the main thing.
I left the hospital at about 15:40 after being told that it was unlikely that I'd be allowed back in to see her before 19:00. I left to pick up our girls.
I've phoned up the hospital several times since coming home, they report she is doing well and she is sleeping. I am going to see her in the morning.
It's been a gruelling day for everyone. I am exhausted but unlikely to sleep.

There were of course some unwanted side effects that continue to this day but had she not had the surgery she wouldn't be here now and for that I am thankful, after all I'm not going to nag my self am I?
