SECRETS Live In Cape Town

SECRETS brings the roof down at Mercury Live

It’s Sunday afternoon and my ears are still buzzing. There’s nothing quite like a proper metal show at Mercury Live.

South African events company, Jam Packed Productions, announced last year that they will be bringing out five international bands over the course of 2018. They also aim to raise R1 000 000 for Rocking for Rhinos as part of these five events. As co-founder, Craig Atkinson, said in an interview with DPC last year: “Rocking for Rhinos is my baby and the reason I do what I do.”

The first of these five bands was post-hardcore rockers SECRETS with three gigs in South Africa. I was lucky enough to catch them for their final show in the country at Mercury Live in Cape Town.

With a top line up featuring three local supporting acts, the night was set to be a rowdy one for rock and metal fans.

Go The Rodeo, a Johannesburg-based electro-rock band, was up first. Although a bit softer than the rest of the line up, the band did well to pull the audience together through vocalist Corne van Niekerk’s interaction with the Crowd and a set that got louder with each song. It was also good to see the venue nicely filled up right from the start.

Set For The Sky turned up the energy a notch and gave the audience a taste of what was to come. The crowd quickly started a small mosh pit, clearly impressed by the band’s high-quality sound and electric performance.

Up next, Facing the Gallows, brought out all the stops with a rock-solid set with new material from their latest album Dead Mindset. The powerful performance from the group gave the crowd the opportunity to make the mosh even bigger and more intense. South Africa’s metal scene is definitely delivering top talent. This is a name to watch!

As SECRETS was busy setting up, I moved to the back of the venue. As they kicked off their set, the sound was a bit off and especially frontman Wade Walter’s vocals was unclear. However, the crowd didn’t care, as the mosh pit grew with each song. Eventually, I moved to the front, which probably led to my ears ringing for days, and it sounded much better.

SECRETS gave their South African fans a powerful set mixed with old favourites and new tracks from their latest self-titled album. They’ve certainly blew a few minds in the crowd.

The group is a powerhouse and much can still be expected from them in the metal scene, as they only formed in 2012.

Mark your calendars for Jam Packed Productions’ next few events!
