A Look Inside Retreat Yourself 2018

Retreat Yourself Festival 2018

When you hear the words “retreat”, “meditation” and “yoga”, you might jump to some conclusions. You might not see yourself as a yogi and you’ve never considered meditation (let alone over a weekend away!)…

…but just hold your horses! That’s not what Retreat Yourself is about.

Retreat Yourself is more than just a yoga and meditation retreat. It’s a special, conscious and uncrowded event experience where you can escape the big city, unwind in nature and celebrate wellness in a variety of interesting (and fun!) ways. I mean, does swimming, Rollerskating and movies sound like a boring health retreat to you?

The Venue

The event was held at the incredibly beautiful Elandskloof Farm in Helderstroom. This working farm just 20 km outside of Greyton offers lush lawns, plenty of trees and stunning trails on the banks of a majestic river. The farm was the perfect choice for the event with swimming spots, a pop-up restaurant under a canopy of trees and plenty of shade.

With plenty of accommodation options, including BYO camping, luxury bell-tents and river-side cottages, the event catered for every pocket, need and taste.

The Schedule

The Entertainment

The schedule featured some top local artists including DJs and bands, as well as a stand-up comedy slot on the Friday evening. The venue was divided into different areas, including the main stage, a restaurant area and a secret dance floor! And again, the organisers succeeded in selecting something for every taste across the different areas.

Food & Drink

Between the trees, the event set up a small food village where you could treat yourself to delicious vegetarian and vegan food, as well as two bars with some seriously delicious drinks, including a range of unique cocktails and G & Ts.

Favourite things about Retreat Yourself

  • Green lawns and swimming spots
  • Delicious melted halloumi burgers
  • Hardly any queues
  • Short films at the open-air cinema
  • Rollerskating
  • G & Ts
  • John Sanel’s Future Preparation Talk
  • The art gallery in the forest (by Andy Neuro)

As with any new festival-type event, there were a couple of growing pains, for example the sound pollution between the main stage and talks circle and a line up delay here and there. However, nothing major hindered Retreat Yourself from running successfully over the 4 days.

I never thought I would have so much fun at an event that focuses on general health, wellness and consciousness, but the organisers did a fantastic job creating a festival that was fun and celebrated everyone that attended!
