Oahu and Maui Film Diary

Oahu and Maui Film Diary

Prior to our trip to Japan last month, I was running low on Film (I only had one roll: a Japanese roll of film that I’m not sure what the name was). I stopped by Treehouse in Kakaako to pick up some film before the trip. Of course, I picked out my favorite film to use (Kodak Portra 400) but Charles insisted I try some  expired film (Kodak Ultramax 400). I was a little wary as I didn’t know what to expect but I bought one to try with the intention of not using in Japan, just in case I didn’t like it.

As I stated, I didn’t use the expired film while in Japan (I ended up using the Japanese film and two rolls of Kodak Portra 400). After our trip to Japan, I have spent all of April shooting film around the island of Oahu and Maui using that expired roll. I got it developed this week and I’m pleasantly surprised at how well they turned out!

Oahu

If you live in Hawaii, or have visited Hawaii in the last few months, you may have noticed how overcast it has been. It has made shooting photos a little difficult (especially with collaborations) so I figured it would be the perfect time to shoot with this roll. It actually made things a lot brighter than it really was!

Maui

I spent four days in Maui last week with Charles. He was quite busy because of work so I took out my SLR to shoot some film. April is a beautiful time in Maui as the jacaranda trees (purple flower trees) are in bloom! They remind me so much of home as the neighborhoods near my mother’s house is full of them! We drove up to Upcountry to find jacarandas. We also ventured out to Twin Falls on the Road to Hana but because of the weather, we turned around and headed back.

I would definitely shoot expired film again! I bought some film while in Tokyo earlier this month which is exclusive to the Japanese film market. I’m a little nervous to try out the new film but I’m trying not to make myself too nervous about it. I’m debating whether or not to use it on my next trip or use it around the island again.
