CELEBRATING MOMS

The voice of reason, story teller, advice giver, hand holder, shopping buddy, cheerleader, broken heart healer, housekeeper, taxi driver, events coordinator, teacher, chef, doctor, psychologist, personal shopper, problem solver, stain removal expert, bouncer, comedian, peace keeper, confidant, angel……MOM! Although we may not realize this until we are older, she IS a superhero!

Honouring Mother’s has been observed around the world since the ancient Greek times, but it wasn’t until 1908 when Anna Jarvis of the US, created a memorial for her Mother and then campaigned to create an official Mother’s Day.

Her persistence paid off, and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson officially established the 2nd Sunday in May to be Mother’s Day. It didn’t take long for the florists, card shops and other retailers to capitalize on the popularity of this day, and because of this, Anna Jarvis then spent the rest of her days trying to abolish this day she Created because she was disgusted with it’s over commercialization. Regardless, this US created holiday continued to be very popular by celebrating Mother’s and other influential women with flowers, gifts and other fun activities.

I have always enjoyed Mother’s Day growing up! My sisters, my Dad and I would always do something special for her and my Grandmothers. We created special homemade gifts when we were younger, make special meals, or take them out for dinner, flowers were bought, cards made and we would try extra hard to be helpful around the house! My Mom’s Birthday often landed on or around Mother’s Day, so there was always a celebration! After losing my Mom, Mother’s Day became difficult, but was still a day to remember her and the other amazing women in my life and reflect on wonderful memories.

Once I became a Mother myself, it again took on a whole new joy…and appreciation for everything my Mother did for us, I could appreciate Super Mom!

So what do you do for your Mom? Are you traditional or do you like to do something a little different?

Young kids, or a Do It Yourselfer? There are some wonderful homemade gifts ideas and keepsakes that can be created.

A food lover? Take her out to one of the many golf courses offering a special Mother’s Day brunch, maybe head out for tea time and treats, or create your own special meal at home with all her favourite foods!

Flowers are always appreciated. Maybe make a special flower arrangement or maybe find something special for the garden.

A popular one with us over the past few years is to enjoy an experience together, take Mom on a date! Think about what your Mom likes to do or has wanted to try. Go on a hike, bike ride, or just stroll along the beach. Maybe she’d like to go Go-karting, or golfing, or take in a new movie, or even one of the local tourist attractions she’s been hoping to visit. The ideas are endless!

It really just comes down to this, tell your Mom or any of the special women in your life you love them, hug them, remember them, and appreciate them! They are part of your family, they are part of your heart!
