'Conspiracy Theory Fridays' Tries To Get To The Church News On Time

Sorry for missing this post last week. It's been rough around the offices recently. Let's get to it...

Church arson was back in the news last week with the attacks on ten Churches in Alabama. You can read the details here. Another Baptist church was destroyed this Thursday in Texas. That story is here. The only real connection between all of the churches authorities can come up with is that they are all Baptist congregations, and all have 'Baptist' in their names. Authorities also say there is doubt about any racial motivation, since half the churches burned have a white congregation.

What's the deal with burning churches? I thought that went out with white hoods and openly bigoted politicians after the civil right movement. And why would someone have a beef with the Baptists? They're really not bad people. Wikipedia has some great info about the Baptist faith.

What caught my attention while reading up on the fires was another unrelated story I came across from New England. AP reported that 40 churchgoers at the Calgary Baptist Church in Darien, Conn. were sickened after drinking juice that had been tampered with. This happened the same week as the fires in the south. You can read the whole story here.

Now, I'm not saying that the two are related, but this is 'Conspiracy Theory Fridays'. Is someone out to punish the Baptists for some reason? Is there some spreading movement against these churches?

People, please. This is 2006. Haven't we moved past religious persecution yet? Who would be so unfeeling that they would take away places of worship for hundreds of people? Or sicken a group of churchgoers by poisoning their food? With so many recent challenges to good conscious and faith, strength comes with unity. We need to throw ourselves behind solving major problems. And not torching churches in the middle of the night like cowards.
