Getting Started Training Your Cat

My three cats are always getting into things and running underfoot.  Playing string with them bored them quickly and afterwards they were back to their previous antics.  After becoming frustrated I decided to try clicker Training my cats.  I’m starting first with Mezzanotte since she is the most Food motivated of the three and will be the easiest to work with.

What I’m using is a small clicking device or clicker you can get at most pet supply stores.  For my target I am using a plastic spoon so my cats can put their noses to the domed end for targeting.  The Reward that works best for Mezzanotte is food but some cats might actually prefer petting as a reward if they aren’t very food motivated.  The food reward needs to be small and something of “high value” that can be eaten in two seconds or else the cat will forget what they were being rewarded for.  I’m currently using Halo brand crunchy treats and Wellness brand jerky treats since they are the only treats my cats like that are already in the perfect size.  The soft chewy LeanTreats my vet gives also work great if you cut them into halves or fourths.  My cats only get treats during training or after vet visits so that helps keep them from getting sick of the treats.
